1) What's the key to success? It's not always hard work!

When you embark on any journey, whether it's getting a music degree, preparing for an audition, or applying for a job, one of the worst questions you can ask yourself is “will it be on the test?”.  Literally (and figuratively) approaching life as a set of requirements to meet likely won't get you the outcome you want!

We were reminded of this recently, after a week of music degree oral exams: that being a "good student", preparing with study guides and lists, and putting in the work to cover what "they might ask" - isn't always going to ensure success.

ⓧ Getting good grades and checking all the boxes? Not the key to success.
ⓧ Even putting in hard, very hard work? Unfortunately, this isn't the key to success either.

If you fail to look beyond the "test" and ask more than the question "What?", most likely you won't achieve the outcomes you desire.

Both working hard and being thorough are definitely great attributes, but read the blog post this week for more about what ARE the attributes that are the foundation for success in life.

2) “All technical problems are to be found in the pattern of the scales by thirds.” - Daniel Bonade quoting Klosé

Did you know? Clarinet legend Mitchell Lurie was a student of both Robert McGinnis and Daniel Bonade? McGinnis himself was a student of Daniel Bonade. and in their lessons, Bonade emphasized playing scales in thirds so much that McGinnis in turn stressed this importance for all of his students.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 would start with Klosé's scales in thirds! ⁣

As Mitchell Lurie tells it: ⁣
𝘔𝘤𝘎𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧𝘧 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩. 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘸. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘻𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘺, "𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬". ⁣

Incredible!! It's an interesting piece of clarinet lineage, but more interestingly, the practice of thirds was so important that it was the only thing in lessons for 𝟖 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬!  ⁣
We don't know about you, but these Klosé thirds are now on our stand.  😁  Enjoy - and haha - see you in (let’s see… 6,7,8…) December!
