Best piece of advice I can offer right now is to just be a real person on the internet. I think everyone is so burnt out with social media due to all this curation of lifestyles people do not actually live. Kinda weird, bro. Stop trying to overly curate the content. YOU are the content. BE the content!
Why has social media conditioned us so much that we don't even know what we actually like or who we really are at our core? Idk. But I also see it and feel it and honestly, I don't like it. If I don't have a reason to post. I don't. If it doesn't feel good or that moment wasn't a moment to share with the world. I don't. Social media can be whatever you want it to be and that's the cool part. You also get to decide what you consume. If you don't like it … re-curate your feed - also, getting off the internet is a real thing. I deleted FB this weekend.
In other creator news, too often I get asked what is the “trick” to social media or how to gain followers – honey, there's no trick. Tbh, I am starting to care a lot less about curation and more about connection. When people feel connected, they stick around a while. Anyone can go viral and anyone can be an internet celebrity. That's easy. But what are your actual intentions on your digital space(s)? Ask yourself that and stop asking what the tricks are.
Whether you are a content creator, entrepreneur, podcaster, blogger, Youtuber or Jesus Christ, anything else lol — the focus should be community.
Below are a few ideas for both the creator & consumer on how to make this better for all of us - because I can sense how tired everyone is - including me.
Dear Content Creators….
GET OFF YA ASS AND ON YA FEET
I have a question for you. Do you know your “why”? Do you actually know what you're trying to achieve in each of your digital spaces? Well, that was two questions, but here's where you start:
+ Know Your Why: What on earth are you creating content for? What is your niche? Do you have a focus? What do you want to be known for? Fashion? Home? Anything? Everything? Your first NINE post on your IG / TikTok is your resume - remember that
+ Consistency: What is your regular cadence? It doesn't have to be your favorite creators schedule - but do you have one? 1x a week, 1x a month, everyday? Pick.
+ Value Add: I want people to come to my page and find a relatable/sassy caption, something great to eat, conversations on IG stories, and chats on the podcast that are being had about everyday struggles with adulting. I thrive on being transparent and relatable and actually NOT making an overly curated feed. What do you offer to your community?
+ Stop Limiting Yourself: One video can go viral. That's easy. Trending audio, trending templates - so easy. But what keeps people on your page. Remember this day and age it's really easy to earn a follow but very hard to earn engagement. Idc if you have 2k followers - engagement is everything over a follower count.
+ The Rules Are Made Up: All the recommendations in the world won't help you if you don't do the work. Do what feels good. Consume what makes you smile. Create something meaningful. How many GRWMs are we going to see until we realize everyone gets ready the SAME DAMN WAY! Make your community rely on you for something meaningful and let the rest be extra
+ Be A Real Person On The Internet: Don't be posting shit you don't actually do or spending money you don't have for content. That's ass backwards and the craziest thing I have ever heard. If you don't actually make your bed everyday and you don't clean your house every Friday night, but you're doing it for the sake of content. I'm sorry, you're being weird - stop it.
Dear Community...
All I can ask from you is to be gracious. The internet has become a saturated place filled with a tons of content that is all starting to look and feel the same. My advice is follow those who bring value. And unfortunately, unfollow those who don't. Sometimes value could be a creator who makes you laugh, or home decor or your favorite luxury lifestyle creator. You define value. You have the power to curate your feed how you want it versus feeling like you don't enjoy time on the internet because babygirl… the internet and influencer marketing is going no where. So fill the feed with content that makes you feel full. Sometimes that may not be close friends, or even me (please don't unfollow me LOL I love it here) But do the things that allow you to enjoy your moments of escape via the world wide web.
So very excited to return with Season 2 this week and I am hoping for a fantastic season with some more amazing topics and even better guests. This Tuesday make sure you tune in! Chatting about what THIRTY feels like. Sneak peek - it feels so amazing!
