Dear Friend,

Last month, I completed my first ever strategic planning retreat for my business. It was a life-changing day, and I wanted to tell you why.

The truth is, after two years of operating The Thirlby Company, I was feeling a bit stuck. I had a lot to celebrate and be grateful for, but one big question kept on swirling around in my head: What the heck is my business all about?

Most companies are able to share with you about the services they provide, or what they're good at. But I believe only some capture and communicate their magic in a compelling way.

Organizations that know their WHY are centered around an authentic belief that fuels the work they do. They know the root problem they are trying to solve, and why they exist.

This concept is best explained in Simon Sinek's Start With Why, where he shares about The Golden Circle. Here's a quick overview:

During the retreat, my consultant (Amanda) and I were determined to nail down my WHY. As Sinek says: “WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?” (p 39).

We walked through my first two years of business, making notes of my happiest days at work. We combed through client testimonials and outcomes. We laughed and we cried. At one point, Amanda said: “Margie, you are someone who can find joy in a pile of poop. We need to get more specific" (true story).

But after a couple of hours, the answer filled the room:

Regardless of the engagement, there was one consistent result: People walked away feeling more confident about who they were, and empowered to take their work and life to the next level.

This central theme of confidence was eye opening. By the end of the day, we arrived at a new mission statement for the Thirlby Company (scroll down for the grand reveal).

Thank you for letting me share bits of The Thirlby Company story with you. The last two years have been epic, and they wouldn't have been possible without this community.

What is your WHY for the work you do? Reply to this email and let me know - I'd love to hear from you.

With gratitude,
