In rehearsal for BT2
Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Chieko Imada has been teaching our Ballet Tucson 2 students the classical romantic ballet Les Sylphides for their upcoming school performance May 24th. Dancer Abigail Lee (pictured here) is currently a Ballet Tucson Trainee and has been training with us since she was 5 years old. She graduates in just one week and we are so proud of her! Ballet Tucson company dancer Casey Johnson is joining our cast of student dancers to provide them with the invaluable experience of performing alongside a seasoned professional dancer, in addition to the experience of working with an experienced partner for our advanced students like Abigail.

About Les Sylphides: This one act ballet was choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to music by Frederic Chopin and premiered in Paris at the Theatre du Chatelet on June 2nd 1909, performed by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.⁣ Les Sylphides is considered a “mood ballet”, having no plot, only a theme and the feeling of a romantic period ballet.⁣ The theme is of a young man (often referred to as “the Poet”) walking at night and encountering a group of white sylphs dancing in the moonlight. He joins in and dances with them (some say it is the poet immersed in his dreams and inspirations).⁣

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Chieko Imada shares a beautiful kimono with us and what it means to her ❤️:⁣⁣

“This kimono is called a Yukata, which is a casual Japanese summer kimono. My mother hand made this Yukata when I was still in Japan. When I was there, we sometimes had Japanese traditional dance class and I wore this Yukata. Our teacher taught us the Azuma style, so the print of this Yukata has those flower logos.⁣⁣

When I wear it I feel my mothers warm hands wrapped around me and I think of home, of tradition, and of beautiful arts. I will be teaching Japanese dance for our upper level students during our Ballet Tucson Summer Dance Workshop and look forward to sharing this tradition with them.”⁣⁣ - Chieko Imada
