Never a dull day in 2022; if it is not a worldwide pandemic, it will be the threat of nuclear apocalypse, gas prices, or, you know, the good old abuse of power in the workplace. That is not new; we are new at talking about it. Do you remember Susane Pfeffer? Hers is admittedly the name I have often used to get into VIP parties during her lengthy KW tenure. ( see How to Get IN uninvited rule nr 3). The open letter referenced in this FAZ article is signed by 80% of her current underlings, flagging her leadership as, well, toxic. When I read similar revelations about women in power, my first reaction is:
“Yeah, she looks like a bitch”.

Then, checking myself, I wonder what happened here. This is not the first female director being pushed out of a position of power due to being “difficult” or a “bad leader” - the accusations are usually anonymous and vague. There is a long list of powerful women accused of a hostile work environment. ( No dick pics involved). Do power, stress, and poorly defined responsibility turn women into monsters? They don't help that is for sure. Or does our socialization shortcircuit us from accepting a power-full, (often) child-free woman as anything other than nature’s abomination?

And let’s go back to the institutional structures for a second. There have been some meagre attempts all over the board (ahem, museums’ board being the operative force of non-change) to modernize and decolonize institutions. Is it enough to change the cover person, say appoint female, BIPOC, LGBTQ leaders though? OR DO YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE STRUCTURES. Duh. How would a new leader fair in unchanged, rigid, conservative structures? An uninteresting gamble.

Again, every worker’s concerns are valid and should be heard, especially art workers whose working conditions are still in the middle ages. Just thinking how easily we buy into the trope of the “difficult” woman. Witch, bitch, potayto pothato.

As for Pfeffer? Yeah, she is a bad boss.

Opening Wed, 25 May, 17-21h @Eigen Art Lab: LŐRINC BORSOS FEAR NOT THE HEAT AHEAD, IT'S THE FIRE THAT FOLLOWS
pyropoetic visions at the end of the world fear not the heat ahead, it's the fire that follows, so fear not the thermal conditions of the inferno, but worry about all the cursed souls you will have to burn with, so fear not the blaze of hell, but brood about the scorching fire plumes of the mundane purgatory, so fear not the dystopian reality you are fully immersed into, but worry about the selfdestructing hedonism that makes you find pleasure in it…

PROTECTION, BY ANNA ANDERS
The exhibition Protection by Anna Anders shows artworks that deal with the theme of protection. She uses photographs and video artworks in situations where people find themselves in unsafe threatening circumstances, or in situations where they realize they should be protecting themselves. By juxtaposing familiar protection, familiar because it has been fashionably and stylishly changed and thus become the everyday norm, with a situation of defenselessness and the search for protection, she sensitively opens up a debate, a discussion about our cultural approach to threat and protection.

A photo exhibition by Adeolu Osibodu from Lagos, Nigeria.
@adeoluosibodu ‘s engagement with photography started at the age of 18 out of the urge to manifest his thoughts. Using this media, he was able to preserve the energy of time plus convey a certain mood. Taking pictures of peculiar scenes, plants, clouds or sun rays coming though an open window, photography almost became therapeutic - and felt like home again.

MAJA WIRKUS & ERIC PRIES WE ARE MILLENIUM STARS
Based on the worldwide correspondence of the renowned architect Helene Syrkus (1900-1982), the artist couple Maja Wirkus and Eric Pries develops installative-scenic units, i.e. moments of exchange translated into images and spatial structures, whereby the artistic medium is always photography and its extensions. To this end, a series of animated films, objects, photographs and text fare superimposed as constantly overwriting, constantly renewing knowledge spaces.
An overview catalogue will be published during the exhibition.

die raum: JOHANNES HELDÉN & JENS SETTERGREN
Floating through a soft mist. When dissolved by terraforming technologies it reveals strange signs of a more-than-human constructor. Smooth, near frictionless, close to perfect vacuum. It seems to be in a constant state of mutation. A stream of consciousness from the future, a text generator, a mad monolith, an ancient quantum computer, an alien life form, an archaeological artifact, a vessel, an erasure poem, an advertisement virus, a communication device, a weather machine, a planetary log, an algorithm, a bad dream, the diary of a bacteria, a lost thought, a contemporary artwork, an incubator?
