First name / Friend, if I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “I want growth opportunities” with no specificity, I’d be a very wealthy woman.

Saying you want to grow in a job without being specific is like telling a realtor you want a house - and that’s it.

So it can be any style? Ranch, yurt, three story, haunted?
It can be 400 sq. ft. or 4000 sq. ft.?
Your house can be right next to a highway? Or in the middle of a rural forest?
It really doesn’t matter? Really?! Ok…here's your house:

Jokes aside, you likely have some strong opinions about where you want to live. I know I sure do. They’ve been shaped by the places I’ve lived, the kind of lifestyle I want to have, the impact I want to have on the planet, and how I view “home” and what it means to me.

This process applies to your professional development, too! To hone in on how you want to grow, ask yourself:

☕ What are my hopes for my career in the next 1-2 years? What specific impact do I want to make and what skill(s) will I need to have to make it happen?

☕ What do I want to be recognized for and why?

☕ Who are the people I need to be connected to/supported by to make these things happen?

☕ [Legacy question] If I could no longer work after 2024, what’s a career experience I’ll be proud of or already am proud of? Why?

From there, you can start to think about the types of experiences that will help you grow.

For example, say there’s a specific network of people you need the support of. Where do they hang out? Do they put on an annual conference you need to be at? And to make the most of it, you need a masterclass on crafting a memorable pitch?

Or do you absolutely need to know Adobe Premiere to get to the next level at work? What will help you actually learn it knowing you won’t follow through on your own?

The more specific you are, the better. Because then you’re not waiting around for your company to offer up “growth opportunities.”

Tell them what you’re looking for, how it’s going to help you contribute to their bottom line, and ask for a stipend (because you've priced it all out).

That bottom line part isn’t a “nice to have.” You need to be clear how this development opportunity is going to help them, too. Come prepared!

To being specific in our growth,
