Between Colombo & Melbourne:
A Tale of Two Homecomings
There’s a LOVI design for any type of wedding celebration––rehearsal dinner, nikah, reception, homecoming et al. We were honoured to create an outfit for Nilantha and Hirushika Perera's two homecoming parties which took place in Colombo and Melbourne. LOVI recently managed to catch up with the couple.

How did you two meet?

H: We were introduced through mutual family friends in June 2019. I was initially in Melbourne and Nilantha was in Colombo. We started chatting through WhatsApp and met in person towards the end of September 2019. From there, the rest was history.
Nilantha, were you nervous to pop the question?

N: Well, the two of us were apart from each other for a long time due to the pandemic so my initial plans of proposing to her in Melbourne didn't go as planned.

I wanted to keep the proposal very simple and intimate. When Hiru came to Sri Lanka in November 2021, we went for a dinner at Jetwing Beach in Negombo. This place was special to us because we had one of our first dates as an official couple there, so I knew it would be ideal. I was very nervous and excited. After dinner we went for a walk and Hiru was being very casual, going on and on about the wedding and then suddenly, I was on one knee and popped the question. I forgot what I had planned to say and Hiru's reaction was so funny.

Planning a wedding isn’t easy but during a pandemic I imagine it is even more stressful! Were there a lot of obstacles to planning yours?

H: Absolutely! Due to the pandemic we were apart for a long time. I couldn't come to Sri Lanka and Nilantha couldn't travel to Australia due to travel restrictions.

N: I had to run about for most things and the planning was done through video calls and chats. Hiru managed to come to Sri Lanka exactly one month before the wedding and we got everything done.

Can you give us an insight into what the homecoming was like?
N: Traditionally, red is the colour of homecoming but since both of us don’t like red too much we looked at other options for our Sri Lankan homecoming. We chose to go with a sunflower and rose theme––one main reason being Hiru means ‘sun’ in Sinhala. We were quite particular with the decor and ‘Lassana Flora’ exceeded our expectations.

You gravitated towards LOVI for your Homecoming attire. Firstly, thank you! And secondly, was there a particular reason you chose LOVI?

N: I have always loved LOVI. Their designs are quite unique and really represent the traditional elements of Sri Lanka.

Since we knew that I would be in a suit for the wedding and Hiru in a dress, both of us wanted to go with a traditional theme for our homecoming.  At the beginning I was not really sure of what I wanted––I had a few ideas in my mind but after we met Asanka he really went beyond our expectations and designed something completely unique. To tie in with the traditional homecoming colours, he added a fine red stitch on either side of my shirt. I absolutely loved it.

How did you both feel that day?

H & N: To be honest, compared to our wedding day, we were both feeling a lot less stressed! Everything went according to plan (surprisingly) and everyone could not stop complementing our outfits.
