DYK: This newsletter helps me pay for grad school! Invest in a future community planner – forward this to a friend and encourage them to…

Hi First name / there

I’m back to the grind this week, somewhat begrudgingly and with a heaping dose of excitement. I started my summer internship yesterday, which means the return to a 40-hour workweek for me.

After weighing my options, I decided to accept a position with Prince George’s County in Maryland. (I shared this on my Instagram Close Friends stories yesterday – if you aren’t on my Close Friends stories but want to be, just reply to this email with your Instagram handle.) Specifically, I work with the Maryland-National Capital area Parks and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in the Community Planning Division’s Neighborhood Revitalization Section (NRS). I’m back in the government, baby!

This also means I have to draw a clear-cut line between myself and M-NCPPC’s work for the duration of my employment. I’ll avoid talking about Commission- or County-related issues beyond information sharing (but there’s lots to share!), and of course: The comments expressed are those of the sender only, and are not authorized or endorsed by the M-NCPPC nor the Park Police. And yes, that disclaimer is straight from our social media policy

Anyway, my first day was great. I received a branded backpack and mostly spent the day working my way through IT security training. I sit directly next to my boss and the Chief Planner, basically the best place an intern can be, I’d say.

Managing adult responsibilities (particularly with a significantly lower income) can be exhausting, but I’m determined to not let Tired be my personality. I want to capture summertime nostalgia, I want to recreate that carefree feeling of fun with friends and yes, I want to participate in a Summer Reading Club!

There won’t be any free personal-sized pizzas for folks who participate, but I think our Summer Reading Club will be fun anyway. (Btw it looks like Pizza Hut has revamped the summer reading challenge and knowing that warms my bookworm heart.)

How it works

If you’ve ever been part of a book club, this will be similar. Instead of books, we’ll read articles or listen to podcast episodes. I love a good book, but I really want this to be a low-stakes thing that folks can drop into with ease. There’s a ton to learn and talk about when it comes to homes and housing, but we’re more capable changemakers when we don’t burn out.

These will be held on Zoom and will likely run for about an hour. If there’s a ton of interest, I may break them up into smaller, repeat sessions. I think book club discussions work best when the group is relatively small, especially when they’re virtual events.

For each session, I’ll prep a few loose questions to help guide our discussion. We’ll begin with some introductions too because I’d love to create space for you all to get to know each other too. What’s an online community without community, anyway?

How to prepare

All you need to do is read or listen to the thing and maybe spend some time thinking about it while you make coffee or go for a Hot Girl Walk. These are of course free for subscribers and will only be open to subscribers! If you’d like to bring a friend, forward them this email and encourage them to Join The Community

What’s the schedule?

Now for the fun part! I selected these pretty much because, after reading/listening to them, I really wanted to talk with someone else about them. I hope you feel the same way!
Great, how do I sign up?

All you need to do is sign up via the button below:
This link will also be available in the member dashboard. You should receive all of the needed Zoom information when you book, but let me know if you run into any issues at all.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful summer of learning and connection with you all. One programming note: I will pause newsletters on the weeks when we have Reading Club. I’m just one person, so I’m trying to be realistic with my time as I grow and scale this community.
Until next week,
🧡 Dominique
