Hello hello! đź‘‹ It's officially summer break, which means the kids are out of school, schedules are disrupted, and life is generally a bit more chaotic (in a good way). Keeping with that theme, this month's email is all about maximalism. This is the good kind of overload! Most Colordrunk projects would probably be considered maximalist, but this one holds a special place in my heart because I got to design it for my son, Wylie. I had endless fun layering accessories & patterns together in this room to create a space that's fun, vibrant, & well balanced.
Tip #2 - Mixers
Order of operations.
When it comes to maximalism, the order in which you build your layers is pretty important. How did we pick a yellow light fixture when there isn't any yellow in the wallpaper? We focused on finding the artwork first, something that wouldn't clash with the paper. That choice then opened up the possibility to look at fun yellow light fixtures. If you're getting stuck building your layers, try changing the order of your approach.
Tip #3 - Garnish
Look into the future.
Another great thing about maximalism is the ease with which you can edit the layers as tastes shift. Of the core elements in this room, I'd say only the one wall of accent wallpaper is going to be “outgrown” soon. The painted trim, blue walls, ceiling paper, and window treatments could all easily work in an older kid's room. You don't need to base all of you decisions on future changes in taste, but keeping it in mind could help save some time down the road.
