When I settled on libraries as the topic for this newsletter, so many memories and experiences came to mind. As a kid, I loved the summer reading program at my local library. I'd max out the reading log and win a personal pan pizza. (You too?) Years later I loved taking my kids to the local story time when they were little. I hope these âthree bitsâ about libraries stir some of your own memories. Also included below: news about upcoming virtual events, art work on exhibition, a few fun links and an Etsy shop update. Cheers friends! |

- Susan Orlean I read The Library Book last year and it's stuck with me. It's a fascinating collection of stories about libraries around the world, shocking events that have occurred, and small personal stories about how libraries affect lives. It's a great reminder that non-fiction can be full of drama and emotion. I'm inspired to think about how I might use those kinds of stories to inform my art.
- NYC My husband and I took a trip to New York City last month and found ourselves with some time after visiting a museum but before going to an evening show. Our phones were dying. We were tired. We didn't want to sit in a cafe since we'd already had an afternoon snack. I suggested a library. The Ottendorfer NYC Public Library was just down the street. Perfect! Each table had a charging station, and the stacks were full of interesting books for browsing, and lots of people came and went during the time we were there. This branch opened in 1884 and was NYC's first free public library. What's more inspiring than 138 years of providing resources, rest and renewal for anyone who comes through the doors?
- Architecture I love photo collections and there are several including libraries. This list includes massive, stately, stunning buildings from all over the world. Here's a more contemporary list with images of new libraries. Architecture is such a great source of inspiration. Just thinking about the shapes of the windows in these buildings has me inspired to consider new negative shapes in my work.
