Many of us know that certain foods are good for us, but more often than not we are unfamiliar with why and how exactly they serve our health and wellbeing.

Below is one kitchen staple that I incorporate regularly a) because I enjoy them and b) because I know how they support my body, mind, emotions and overall quality of health. Have at it!

Protein Powder

At the end of the day, the best protein powder for you is the one you’ll enjoy regularly. It’s also one that is:
  1. Made of good quality ingredients (no additives, fillers, preservatives or artificial flavors)
  2. Third party tested
  3. Adheres to manufacturing quality standards
You see, protein powder falls under the category of “dietary supplement,” meaning that it is not FDA regulated. This means that it's left up to manufacturers to evaluate for safety, labeling and legitimacy claims, which can get a bit dicey.

Without third party testing, there’s no real way of knowing if the powder really is what the manufacturer says it is. Do you know what I mean? For example, just recently, a non-profit group called the Clean Label Project (check it out) released a report covering protein powder toxins and contaminants. According to a post written by Harvard Health

“Researchers screened 134 products for 130 types of toxins and found that many protein powders contained heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury), bisphenol-A (BPA, which is used to make plastic), pesticides, or other contaminants with links to cancer and other health conditions. Some toxins were present in significant quantities. For example, one protein powder contained 25 times the allowed limit of BPA.”

BPA, by the way, stands for bisphenol A, which is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1950s. In other words, not anything anyone should be ingesting - even in small trace quantities.
