NAIDOC WEEK 3-10 JULY
Image item
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday, on now!), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories, and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.

You may see displays in your library this week, and you can also take this time as an opportunity to engage with library collections on Aboriginal history, experience, and culture. Or read a book by an Aboriginal Austhor.

Speak to our staff for more information.

Library and Information Week, 25-31 July
Image item
Rewrite. Renew. Reimagine.

This Library and Information Week we are encouraging everyone to re-engage with the library, immerse yourself in the resources and collections, ponder on the stories we’ve been told and modify old understandings with revised stories... or re-tell them with a fresh new vision.

Want to begin research for your novel? Want to start mapping or expanding your family tree? Want to make an edit in a Wikipedia entry, or unearth something new in the archive? Perhaps you want to reimagine the possibilities for your career, or simply conduct a thought experiment that might lead to a radical, transformative idea. You can do all of this and much more provided you are equipped with access to information and a desire for deeper enquiry.

Library and information services employees of all kinds are both generalists and specialists. The access to information they provide can empower library users everywhere to reflect on old narratives, rewrite their own stories and others, to revise what we know, to seek and understand a different perspective so that we can make better choices about our future, as individuals and as a community.

In your library, you may see displays, and have the opportunity to attend workshops and events which highlight the ways you can rewrite, renew, and reimagine in your library.

Regina Petra Meyer will discuss her book Change of Course: Sailing into love and Adversity on Caribbean shores at Ballina and Byron Bay Libraries.

Talking points will be writing, sailing, travel and living abroad, life in the Caribbean, and philosophy.

Regina was born and raised in Switzerland. While working as a travel agent, her curiosity was piqued by coordinating trips around the world. Eventually she packed her own bags and adopted a globetrotting lifestyle.

Regina has adventured across all continents—she has lived and worked in Antigua in the Caribbean, the USA, New Zealand, and currently calls tropical Cairns, Australia, her home.

Regina has no children, remains unmarried, and cherishes the freedom her life offers.

Alongside her passion for worldly explorations, she is equally curious about her inner journey and evolution. When she’s not writing, she loves empowering individuals to embrace courage and follow their dreams.

Come and learn about aware parenting, an evidence-based child-rearing philosophy
that helps babies, children, and adults process emotions. The Aware Parenting approach teaches that when babies and children cry and laugh with the support of a carer, they can sleep better, be calmer, and concentrate for longer periods of time.

Big emotions that accumulate in the body can disrupt the bodies homeostasis, and cause babies and children to be aggressive or suppressive. Parents also learn alongside their children, how to communicate their feelings with more ease.

Contact participating libraries for bookings and more information.

Library Building Update
Lismore Library is still in the process of being cleared, with walls, ceilings, and floors being made ready for renovation. Electricians visited last week to prepare the circuit breaker to return power to the building. The process is slow, however there have been some interesting finds, with covered windows and doorways being unveiled from when the building was Lismore High School.

book Review With Jenny Dowell

Believe in Me
by Lucy Neave

I have no recollection of where I heard of this novel but I’m so glad I’ve read it.
The general theme of Believe in Me is the mother-daughter relationship between Sarah and her daughter, Bet.

Sarah aged 18 is sent by her own mother, Greta, in the 1970s from Ploughkeepsie New York, to accompany a 40-year-old married missionary to Idaho. When Sarah is raped and becomes pregnant, her mother sends her to relatives in Sydney who place her in a home for unmarried mothers.

Many years later daughter Bet tries to understand her mother’s past, and the life they shared. But can any daughter fully understand her mother? Especially when that mother feels she’s inadequate while feeling betrayed by her own mother.

Set both in the USA and in Australia, the novel captures the political and social conditions of the 1970s and 1980s in both countries. In Australia, Gough Whitlam’s government is on the brink of collapse, the environmental movement is engaging around the Franklin dam, and feminism is emerging.

Juxtaposed with the contemporary conditions are frequent references to religion and associated imagery that are significant aspects of Sarah’s life and the relationships she forms with a variety of men. There is also powerful mothering imagery as veterinarian Bet, delivers a foal from a dying mare and attempts to put the foal with another mare that lost its foal.

Lucy Neve lives in Canberra where she teaches creative writing, but has also spent time living and teaching English in the USA—including New York. Believe in Me is her second novel, but she’s most prolific in the novella and short story genres. Her experience writing in a shortened form strengthens this novel where the chapters are rich without excess.

The book is deeply moving as it explores intimate family relationships, dependency, and the challenges of a single mother through both Bet’s first-person narrative, and Sarah’s third-person story. None of the main characters is drawn with simplistic brush strokes and most—while flawed—elicit the reader’s compassion.

This is one of the best books I’ve read and I cannot recommend it more highly to you.

5/5

Thanks Jenny, for another incredible review!
Believe in me is an unforgettable and profound novel about three generations of one family and the healing power of understanding where you’ve come from. It received a highly commended award  in the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards—Christina Stead Prize for Fiction.
