The Weekly Update

Good Morning Friends & Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

How was your week? Great I hope! My week was filled with work, testing a new eyebrow product that was sent to me (a review is coming to the blog soon) as well as the usual keeping my home in order too. Thank goodness this weekend is a three day weekend! I need some time to relax with a glass or two of Pinot Grigio and a good book and celebrate America's 246th birthday too!

Oh, and in-between all of this week's busyness, I was able to start reading a new book this week, “The View From Alameda Island” by Robyn Carr (I read her book “Sunrise On Half Moon Bay” last week). It's a story about a woman who ends her 24 year marriage to her well known surgeon husband who has been very abusive to her over the course of their marriage and how she transitions to life as a single woman, trying to find her way in the world. Great story so far. I should finish this book tonight and tomorrow I will head to the library to return books and check out new books. If you have any book recommendations that you think I should check out, please hit the “REPLY TO ME” button in the “Let's Talk About It" section down below and send your recommendations to me!

Well, that's all I have for you this week. I hope you all have a very festive and safe 4th of July weekend and I will talk with you all next week! Now on to this week's update!

Here's What I Have Been Loving This Week:

Makeup Revolution Fast Base Stick Foundation ($9) – While going through my makeup collection recently, I came across this foundation (in shade F6). I have been wanting to switch to more cream based makeup products since my skin seems to be drying out more as I get older, so I decided to pull this out of my collection to try again. WOW! I have forgotten how creamy this foundation is and I also have forgotten the amount of coverage (high medium to full) you can get with this foundation and I didn't need to use any concealer! After I applied the foundation and a cream blush stick (that applied easily over the foundation), I did not set with powder (because using any type of setting powder just makes my skin look and feel dry), I set my face with a setting spray and this foundation lasted all day, kept my skin hydrated all day and the foundation didn't settle into my fine lines all that much too! This foundation comes in comes in 18 shades and I highly recommend! If you are looking to incorporate more cream based makeup products into your makeup routine or you have dry or dry/mature skin, this foundation is worth giving a try!

This Week's Failures

Here's What I Have NOT Been Loving This Week:

Albolene Moisturizing Cleanser ($9.74 for 12 oz.) - When I used this cleanser to remove my makeup back in the day, I loved it! Now, all these years later, I am not as big of a fan as I once was. This cleanser is paraben, preservative and fragrance free, is supposed to remove all traces of makeup (including eye makeup) and is not supposed to strip the skin of moisture. This cleanser does remove all of my makeup, but the problems with this cleanser for me are: 1. This cleanser burns my eyes (no matter what type of eyeshadow or mascara I have on). 2. This cleanser feels heavier on my skin than some of the other cleansing balms I have used and a little harder for me to remove. 3. When it comes to removing this cleanser, I used a microfiber face makeup remover towel and the cleanser and the microfiber face towel doesn't seem to mesh well together and my skin and eyelids felt and looked irritated (the same thing happens when I use a basic soft facial washcloth too) and I am gentle when I remove my makeup. So, I can't recommend this cleanser because of the issues I have with this product. But, if you are looking for a great, inexpensive makeup remover, I recommend Trader Joe's Nourish All-In-One Facial Cleanser ($5.99 for 8.45 oz.). I love this cleanser! It removes all of my makeup, works well with my microfiber makeup remover towel and doesn't burn my eyes, but this does leave my skin slightly dry because this is a foaming cleanser and I have dry, mature skin, so for my second cleanse, I use this hydrating cleanser that helps with the dryness and I am okay with that because this cleanser works! So, if you are a Trader Joe's shopper like myself, check out this cleanser (as well as their other skin and hair care products).

Happy Fourth Of July!

Good Morning Friends!

Happy Friday everyone! It's a three day weekend and many of you will be celebrating America's birthday throughout the weekend and that got me thinking, how should pet parents protect their fur kids from the loud 4th of July noises that go on throughout the weekend. So, off to mama's computer to research for tips to help pet parents protect their fur kids over the 4th of July weekend and here is what I found:

Pet Health & Safety Tips For The Fourth Of July

If your neighborhood is anything like mine, the booms and bangs of the Fourth of July firework celebration start a week before the official holiday. Every summer, pet owners are told to be mindful of pet health and safety during this holiday, so here are some tips to help your pet remain calm during this Fourth of July and by following the simple tips below, you can prevent your pet from becoming what many animal shelters call a “July 4th pet,” or a pet that becomes frightened, runs away, and ends up in a shelter.

Keep Your Pets in a Quiet Room at Home

When fireworks start going off in your neighborhood, make sure your pets are safely confined in a quiet, escape-proof area. Drawing the blinds and turning on a radio can help muffle the noise.  Don’t underestimate the skills of a scared dog – there have been accounts of dogs pushing open doors and digging under fences to get away. Loose and scared, the potential for dogs and cats to get into an accident or get injured increases greatly. It’s better to be safe than sorry but having pet insurance coverage for your dogs and cats can help in the event something does happen.

Don’t Console a Frightened Pet During the Fireworks

It sounds counterintuitive and while there is debate over the issue, consoling a frightened pet could reinforce the fearful behavior by essentially saying, “You have a reason to be afraid.” Instead, make sure your pet is in a safe area and go about your normal business. Your reaction to the fireworks will show your pet there’s nothing to fear. You can also distract your four-pawed friend with a toy and praise him or her for non-fearful behavior, like tail-wagging.

Make Sure Your Pet Has ID Tags and a Microchip

Frightened pets are much stronger than we think, and an ordinarily calm dog can bolt and break free from a leash or jump from a car with little warning. If an unexpected bang causes your dog or cat to run, a proper collar, tags and/or microchip can help you have peace of mind.

Consult Your Veterinarian for Easily Stressed or Anxious Pets

If your pet usually reacts fearfully to loud sounds like thunder or garbage trucks, consult your veterinarian about how to reduce your pet’s anxiety. The anxiety is not good for your pet’s health, and your veterinarian should be able to provide helpful guidelines and information.

Exercise Your Dog Before the Fireworks

Most pets will fare much better if they are tired by the time the festivities begin. If your dog has an extra-long stay at the dog park or a nice long walk or jog with you, they will most likely be calmer and display less anxiety in the evening.

Avoid Discarded Fireworks

Once the noise of the 4th of July finally subsides, unused and used fireworks can be found on the street where you walk your dog and even in your backyard. Make sure your dog doesn’t become curious and begin playing with or eating the leftover debris. Ingesting unused fireworks can be poisonous to pets and cause vomiting, abdomen pain, and bloody diarrhea.

Most dog and cat parents consider their pets to be part of their families, and it’s no fun when we have to exclude them from family events. But the 4th of July is a time pet parents really ought to put their own feelings aside and do what’s best for the safety and health of their dogs and cats!

That's all I have for you this week, I hope you all have a safe and festive 4th of July weekend! Don't forget to keep your fur kids as safe and calm as possible and I will bark with you all next week and remember, adopt, don't shop!

Fourth Of July Rice Krispies Treats

Delicious, simple, and quick 4th of July Rice Krispies Treats are always a hit and are festive for any patriotic occasion. Here’s the recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
  • 6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal (divided)
  • 16 oz. Marshmallows (divided)
  • 3 TBS Margarine or Butter (divided)

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Gather your supplies and divide the Rice Krispies and marshmallows in threes for the three layers (2 cups Rice Krispies and about 2 cups marshmallows per layer).
  2. Add first batch of marshmallows to a microwave safe bowl along with 1 TB margarine or butter for a few minutes or until they start to get big and almost touch the top of the microwave. Take them out, stir well and add the blue food coloring.
  3. Then add 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir well. Press into well-greased 9x9 pan (you can use a 9x13 pan, but you will have thinner treats).
