I'm certainly not alone in finding the moon inspiring. It's fair to assume humans have enjoyed looking at the moon since the beginning of our time on this planet. So, it's hard to share just three bits about the beautiful glowing rock in the sky. Maybe they'll prompt you to find other moon-related media to inspire your own art. I'm excited about the launch of the Artful Holiday classes. See below for more info. Also, updates about Follow Up Sessions, new artwork, other recommendations, and an Etsy shop discount code. Have a wonderful day – and a wonderful night looking up into the sky.

  1. Midnight Oil Studio I fell in love with the beautiful printmaking of Jonathon and Allison Metzger at an art fair. We purchased a phases of the moon print that includes glow-in-the-dark ink. So fun! Their compositions are both gracefully simple and thoughtfully complex. This is a balance I think about in my own work.
  2. Telescope My husband purchased a telescope in late 2020. We're entering the second year of regular use, which means we're getting a sense of the annual cycle of the planets moving through the galaxy and appreciating how the moon changes through each month. Looking at the same thing over and over at different times gives me such an appreciation of nuance and detail. In the picture above, you can see the telescope sitting in our entryway next to our grandfather clock which features a phases of the moon dial. Sadly, that feature is no longer working, but it still keeps pretty good time. (It's more than 250 years old.)
  3. Dallas Skyline  I always love a timelapse! This one of the moonrise over the Dallas skyline is pretty fun. There are so many interesting details to notice – the reflection in the water, the movement of the clouds, the odd rewind section in the middle, and the lights coming on as darkness settles over the city. I've been thinking about how I might represent the passage of time in my work.

Keeping with the moon theme…

A few recommendations…
  • I loved this video about how ceramist Erin Hupp creates dishes for chefs in San Francisco.
  • My daughter and I are enjoying playing Redactle. It's super nerdy!
  • Cha Cha Real Smooth on Apple TV was a delight. One of the characters collects potato mashers. Is that an intriguing details that might get you to watch? I hope so.
