Hey there First name / friend! It’s been a while. How are you?

I was out of the studio for a couple of months for personal reasons, but I am back in full swing! I wanted to share a couple of tips today about creating authentic art. Read on!

The other day I was listening to an episode on Nicholas Wilton's podcast, Art2Life, about finding your style. Whether you are in search of your “style” or not, it’s worth a listen. Style is such a weird word…

It got me thinking. Do we need one particular style to be a successful artist? I don’t think so. I’d love your thoughts on this. Take Emily Jeffords, for example. She is a highly successful artist with multiple creative styles. She paints large scale landscapes and small abstracts. What matters most is, are you creating authentic work you’re in love with? Do you live for the process of creating your art? If so, that’s all that matters. If your passion shines through your work and the way you speak about your work, your people will pick up on that!

If you’re in that exploration phase of finding a process that speaks to your soul, I have a couple of tips that helped me find my authentic style.

TIP 1
This may sound odd, but consider deleting every artist on Instagram that you’re picking up direct inspiration from. Example: looking at their art and trying to mimic it, whether consciously or unconsciously. If you’re trying to find your authentic style and build a business around it, it’s important to search deep within you. At this stage, other artists may be a distraction.

TIP 2
If you find yourself looking towards IG and Pinterest too often for inspiration, delete the apps for a week or two. This was a GAME CHANGER for me! After I deleted artists on IG whose work I was starting to mimic, I deleted Pinterest. I didn't realize how often I was searching for inspo online instead of in my surroundings. Within these two weeks, something clicked. I felt a fire light inside of me that I had never felt. It was the start of finding my authentic style and everything flowed from there. It wasn’t an easy flow but it was the start!
Why did this happen? I believe creativity is a powerful being of its own. Once you open yourself up to your true creativity and search for it within you (not through the eyes of others. Aka social media) it will poke its head out and say hello! When you start to create art from that place within, it all kind of falls together, with some hard work in the studio, of course!

The process of creating authentic art will feel different for everyone. I just wanted to share my opinion and what helped me! This episode on Emily Jefford's podcast was just what I needed to hear when I was going through this stage. It was a tough and uncomfortable listen but changed EVERYTHING for me.

First name / friend, I would love to hear your thoughts on all of this. Reply to this email if you would like to chat :)

As always, thank you so much for being here.
