I traveled to Copenhagen and Stockholm with my mom and my son last month. We had a fantastic time. What a special gift to take a “three generations” trip. We saw so many cool things including a tiny sculpture of a set of open hands. I've been thinking about it ever since and decided to pick hands as the theme for this month's newsletter. Our hands are such amazing tools, right? They've inspired art, poetry and shadow play. They can be symbols of creation, possession, direction and identity. Here are just three examples of hands as inspiration, including the sculpture from Stockholm. Read on for information about the upcoming Follow Up Session, Artful Holiday updates and more news from my studio. I hope you're cherishing the power of your hands today.

  1. I spotted this charming small bronze sculpture of a set of open hands in Stockholm, Sweden. It was at the base of a railing along a raised sidewalk, almost hidden. I couldn't find any information about an artist or the mysterious placement. I think I like it even more because it was so unexpected and curious. More pictures in this Instagram post.
  2. Of the many amazing things humans can do with the hands, finger tutting is maybe the coolest. It's like dancing with just your hands and fingers. Check out this stunning example from Status Silver. I love the unexpected curves, angles and symmetry he's creating. Totally inspiring as I cut different shapes of fabric.
  3. I love this collection of work gloves. Photographer Barry Rosenthal works with found objects. There is so much variety of shape, size, color and configuration in this image – and yet they are all the same. I'm inspired to think about how to use repetition and collection in my own work.

Studio Update
I’m beginning work on a landscape art quilt collage. The color palette 💛💚🤎 is inspired by a hillside I pass while driving to yoga. It’s been so incredibly hot and dry that much of the landscape is brown. Some of the dry grasses look gold. Many of the trees are green and there are other resilient plants that fill in the potential darker and lighter tones. Here are the fabrics I pulled for my palette.
