Hi there First name / friend!

Here are 4 things on our mind with links, tips and more!

#1: Vade Mecum
This book really is a “guide” to clarinet playing - although at first glance it can be intimidating or confusing. And after a while… anything can get boring. We've been talking about it all week on Instagram and here's a link to a highlight linking to some tips on the first exercise, the left hand study, and sometime today … the articulation study!

#2: Does Beethoven 8 steal your joy?
Haha - we asked this in a poll on IG this week and 54% of you said yes. But… hopefully these tips will help! If you want more orchestral excerpt help, did you know we have an orchestral excerpt guide?! This 20 page PDF guide gives you a foundation for practicing 6 of our most popular excerpts including Mozart Concerto, Mendelssohn Scherzo, Beethoven 6 and 8, Dances of Galanta and Firebird! I WANT AN EXCERPT GUIDE!

#3: Figure out what you want - not what others want for you
We had such a nice convo with Sam Rothstein last night and at the end of the conversation, he said something very wise: figure out what you want, not what other people want for you. Everything changes when you take a minute to ask, do I want this? Do I want to sound like this? Does this work for me? We're so used to listening to our teachers and getting guidance, but sometimes you need to block everyone else out and try to listen to yourself.

#4: Sound is at the core of it all!
Lots of you have been asking about how to keep the sound stable, resonant and ringing. Here's an exercise from Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr that addresses ALL of those things!

Tips:

â–· get a beautiful start to each note
â–· don't "balloon" the long notes - keep things very legato from the long note through to the fermata
â–· get a relaxed, big "reflexive" breath after you hold the fermatas
â–· focus on producing a ringing, resonant sound by not biting, keeping the air moving and the chest free
â–· Play at a f dynamic and pay attention to matching each note to the next as you ascend
