What has exploring “self" been like for you? I've been feeling incredibly inspired by what I've seen you create so far and am excited to share! |

MELISSA Self portrait today (left) & from 5 years ago (right) Of the older portrait: "Everyone says she’s so calm, so peaceful. And she was in a way..but it’s only because she worked so hard to keep herself safe. She’s sweet and compassionate and caring, but contained. She has so much to offer, but she’s keeping it inside, to herself. It scares her to let it out, for it to be seen. She’s beautiful and peaceful..but also sad. She wears a mask to cover it, but it’s there. She closes her eyes to it, she buries it all so deep not knowing yet that in burying the pain, she buries the good. She wants so much but is afraid of it at the same time. She’s afraid to really look so cultivates this outward calm born from inwardly controlling it all and isolating herself to protect her heart. She’s literally in a box meant to keep her safe..telling herself that she has all that she needs. Fast forward to today…" Read more in Melissa's post--it's a beautiful and inspiring reflection on growing and becoming who we are. |

CLAUDIA "I started my self portrait with an unflattering photo I took of myself (I made a twisted face in the selfie and took no care to frame myself in any "nicer/prettier" way.) Day 1 I sketched from the photo in pencil - and on subsequent days I added watercolor, some pens and then ended with mod podge / pearl ex / gouache and white gel-pen tears." The colors, shapes, loose lines, and bold strokes make Claudia's self-portrait so interesting! I also really like how she made a face and didn't try to adjust the image--a breath of fresh air from the perfectly filtered and curated photos we see so often now! |

IDA “I haven’t done a self portrait since I was a kid - so it was challenging to say the least 😅” I think it turned out beautifully and the play with shadow is very cool! |
|
TYRA “I’m actually doing a self portrait spread currently in my sketchbook where I’m drawing myself each month of 2022 (pictured below). For this prompt I’m going to draw a mini cartoony self portrait like in the photo, but fill the background with random things about me/that I like! It’s going to be filled with drawings, stickers, etc!” I think the idea of doing monthly mini portraits is so fun and wanted to share Tyra's idea! Can't wait to see the one she creates for this prompt! |

VANESA did 2 versions for her self portrait: an ink transfer where she's in her happy place and gouache on gesso. She was recently diagnosed with a macular pseudo hole and she painted the images from her diagnosis to create a portrait with them. I actually thought the paintings were photos at first because they look so real (!) and find it so powerful she created a portrait using them! |

I was very excited about this prompt and had an idea early on to split the page into 4 parts and use 4 different mediums to create my self-portrait. It felt very fitting since I love trying different art forms and this would also make the portrait more abstract. The first two sections are done, collage and pencil sketch, and I'm excited to finish the bottom half of my face lol and see how this all turns out! Here's a short process video. |

In the spirit of “self”, I thought these free personality tests might be fun to try! :) I'm an ENFJ (I feel seen), Enneagram 7 (I feel SO seen lol), born year of the rat, and I'm a virgo (moon in sag--thank you Quinny for the fun insights! :)) What about you? |

The gallery has been updated with photos from Week 0 through Week 3 over in the Flickr gallery! Head on over for more inspiration from the lovely creatives we are un-slumping with! Have a great rest of the week and I can't wait to see more of your interpretations for “self"! I'll talk to you on Friday for our 5th and final prompt! |
