HiFirst name / friend,

Welcome to my better-late-than-never fourth journal instalment!
I've been taking some time for myself this month, First name / friend… hence the later than usual update. I've invested in myself for a change by taking an exercise class for the first time in 9 long years. Nope — I am not kidding. But, I've done it… and it was fabulous… and I feel SO great about making time for something I used to love doing before kids (reformer pilates). I'm already booked in for the whole of next month. Go me!

This year I've also progressively stepped back from working at night. Now I only do it if I want to… and it's lovely to be established enough to see it as a ‘choice’.

But it wasn't always like this. When I was transitioning from full-time day-job to full-time creative I was hustling hard. I had to work at night and on weekends if I wanted to make any progress on achieving my goal of ditching the day job to live a creative life. Working until midnight (at least) most nights after the kids had gone to bed was my norm for the past few years. Don't get me wrong… I loved it! Because I was so determined to reach a point where I felt secure in my creative business… but working at that tempo isn't sustainable.

If you are still in this phase… I want to remind you — don't compare someone else's ‘middle' to your beginning. Hang in there and keep working towards your own goals. Persistence and consistency really are key — even if you don't feel like you're making a lot of progress. Your time will come if you stick with it!

Here's a quote by Oprah Winfrey that was shared in a course I'm taking at the moment. I thought of you as soon as I heard it! It's a great reminder for those times when you're feeling like it's all getting a bit hard and you might want to give up...

What do these words mean to you?

For me, I think they remind us to release the ultimatum we sometimes unfairly place on ourselves to do things perfectly, or not at all. This mentality stops us from growing and progressing… and stops some of us from doing anything at all! You might feel frozen.

It's important to note that our 'best' can also change from day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month… depending on what else we have going on in our lives. All we should expect to do is ‘our best’ at any given moment. And if we keep doing our best… it's inevitable that we will learn ways to improve and do even better at a later moment. But we must DO the things to keep learning and moving towards what we want to achieve!

Speaking of the course I'm taking… this is a great time to introduce a new section of the Journal… Study Nook!

STUDY NOOK
I'm 5 out of 6 modules deep into Amy Porterfield's Digital Course Academy. I invested a fairly substantial chunk of cash to learn from the best, to create courses that deliver so much value to you.

Did I feel guilty about investing the money in something that I already know how to do (and have received great feedback on)?

Yeah, I did! But when I discussed my intentions with Dan, he reminded me that creating online courses is one of our major goals… and why shouldn't I be learning how an expert does it!? In the end, it was a no brainer and I haven't regretted it for a second.

I might share more about the course in an upcoming journal but, for now, you might like to check out Amy's free podcast on marketing.

EDUCATION STUDIO
Surface Pattern Design: Grow Your Career with an E-Commerce Business
You might've heard about — or already taken — my online course on How To Grow Your Surface Design Career with an E-Commerce Business.

This course teaches you how to create another stream of income for your creative business, by selling physical products on your website or Etsy store and using Spoonflower as your fulfilment ‘partner’ (so you don't need to pick, pack, or post anything)!

The earning potential has increased substantially now that Spoonflower is running *very generous* promotions multiple times a month.

Wondering how this dropshipping model would help your business?

I've put together a list of 10 reasons why you should consider selling Spoonflower products on your website or Etsy store and there's a video to show you just how much you can earn on a dropshipped transaction.

As a courtesy, the cost of my course will be increasing this October.

WEBSITE REFRESH
My website is always a work in progress — I am always tinkering, and over the last few weeks I've given it a little refresh.

I've updated my Favicon (the tiny little image that is displayed on the browser tab), changed my fonts, and updated the main copper colour to a warm yellow. I'm pretty happy with it :)

In case you're wondering, First name / creative friend… I built the website myself using Squarespace; and, while I've been tempted to switch over to a website builder like Showit… I've stuck with Squarespace for now and made it work for me.

In the past I haven't really loved Squarespace for e-commerce, but they are continually making improvements and it's been super easy to create my ‘surface design’ website. Take a peek and let me know what you think!

Until next time, First name / friend :)

PS I'm planning to announce details of my course in my next journal! I'm making myself accountable by mentioning it here 😅
