Hey First name / friends!

One of the questions I get asked all the time is how to stand out on print on demand sites like Society6 and Redbubble. I’m going to let you in on a little secret this week. The key to success with art licesning or print-on-demand is to plan ahead. My art sales took off when I started planning for upcoming trends and shopping seasons.

With that in mind, I’m actually already looking ahead to the holiday shopping season! November and December are the biggest shopping months of the year, and if you want to sell your art online, you want to make sure that you’re set up ahead of time to capitalize on that shopping surge.

Next month I’m going to gear these challenges and newsletters toward setting up an online shop in preparation for the holidays. But in order to set up a shop successfully, there is something you’ll need to do first - create a strategic body of work!

This month we’re going to focus on putting together a trending portfolio of work. If your goal is to sell your artwork online, you want to make sure that you’re creating artwork that people want to buy. The best way to do this? Trend tracking!

Learning how to forecast upcoming popular trends will help you capitalize on them to create profitable designs with mass appeal. Focusing on motifs, colors, and patterns that are rising in popularity is the key to creating artwork that sells well.

I know trend tracking can feel elusive, but once you learn what to look for you’ll find that forecasting trends can be easy and fun!

Wondering where to start with trend tracking?

My class, Trend Forecasting for Visual Creatives, will walk you through the trend tracking process step-by-step. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to identify upcoming trends so you can create a body of work that sells well!

#CreateWithCatCoq:
Trend Research + Create a Trending Illustration

The goal this month is to create trending illustrations that you can sell or license. This week I want you to take some time to research what’s trending and create a list of trending motifs or color palettes that you want to use in your designs this month. Share one of your trending illustrations on Instagram with the hashtag #CreateWithCatCoq so I can see what you create!

For the rest of the month, your prompts will be geared towards specific trends. But I wanted to kick things off by empowering you to learn how to forecast trends and use that skill to strategically build your portfolio!
