Dearest friends,

We’ve missed you! After a hiatus from your inbox, we’re delighted to return with recommendations from the literary world — of independent publishers who are changing the publishing landscape for the better; of fiction in translation that deserves reading in every language; of events and conversations that expand our ideas of what is possible.

The autumn season is one of the most exciting in the book world. As the nights draw in, so storytelling draws out, and we huddle—alone, with a blanket or together, with a purpose—to discover worlds amidst the pages.

We hope this monthly digest helps in your literary navigations.

Fondly,
The Upstart & Crow Team:
Zoe, Ian, Robyn and Chelsea

We've Got Events… Lots of Them!
This Fall we have a series of unmissable events that speak to pressing issues, possible solutions, and timeless culture. We’ll share our October events soon, too, but for now, do join us for…

We've got talent
Introducing robyn smith

I’m Robyn, and I’m thrilled to be the studio’s new Creative and Operations Director, which means I’ll be dreaming up events, book launches and other fun treats in the space alongside the team you already know.

Landing at Upstart & Crow marks my return to the book world. In my younger years I worked at Toronto’s Mabel’s Fables, a magical children’s bookstore purportedly run by a cheddar-coloured cat named Mabel, but actually run by brilliant owner Eleanor LeFave. I also spent a decade in journalism and most recently finished up a seven-year term as editor-in-chief of The Tyee, an award-winning independent digital news publication covering B.C. and beyond.

One of my biggest takeaways from that experience? Stories can create good change, and good trouble.

Also, independence matters. I believe that corporate ownership, of media or bookshops or really any enterprise, dilutes quality and truth. That’s why U&C appeals to me – it’s independently owned and committed to lifting up writers and stories through its programming and selections.

I decided to get back into books because reading is one of my greatest passions and means of coping in this world. I love to read, and meet fellow readers, and talk about reading. There’s nothing more soothing to me than being immersed in a beautiful book. And there are plenty of those at Upstart. So do please come say hello.
We've Got Picks:
September Recommendations

We've Got Googly Eyes…
For Google reviews! These are our love language. You writing a review raises our profile and helps other people find our store, and we’re so grateful. Feel free to flex your lexicon. As one Google reviewer said, “The person who helped me was kind and just vibing.” We love vibing with you all! Thanks for your ongoing love and support — it means the world to us.

We've Got Life Changes
ICYMI: Zoe and Ian tied the knot this month, on the same day—in fact—that they opened Upstart & Crow two years ago.

We also said farewell to our incredible Creative Associate Ignacia Mendez, who heads off to law school this Fall. We’ll miss Ignacia’s vivacious energy, warmth and terrific literary recommendations but are so excited for her next chapter. Congratulations, Ignacia!
We've Got Job Openings
We’re looking for our next Sales Associate to join our team.
Applications close September 12! Find out more here.
