Why I’m taking action 🥳

Hello First name / friend,

There I was, on another instagram LIVE with zero viewers, honestly I felt like shit. Why was I bothering to do it? Did people not believe in me? Maybe I’m just not good enough.

Why am I starting this newsletter | A short story
Around mid 2020
It was at some point between the self doubting and coming off that LIVE I realised I was looking at the whole thing the wrong way around.  I needed to reframe my thinking and take step back from the void of self doubt. I wasn’t doing it for validation I was doing it because I wanted to help elevate Magic to a respected art form in the entertainment industry, among the public, and move the term ‘Magician’ to respected career choice. Essentially I wanted to be the example I needed when I was on my own journey.

April 2021
I had been posting content on the @Givingmagic instagram account every week for over a year the private group grew to over 100 followers, I didn’t feel I was achieving what I wanted, life took over and I stopped. In the meantime however, I received the text message which would eventually lead to me writing this newsletter;

Fast forward 18 months and I get this text 👇

I am so proud of Ray!  He realised his potential, put in the work, and has made huge improvements, not just in his magic and technique, but in his performing persona and self confidence.  I cannot take credit for his success (I didn’t do the work for him), so how did I help?

The Magic PT
 I’ve spent some time thinking about ‘how’ exactly I helped Ray achieve his ambitious goal, and I’ve boiled it down to 3 things;
  • I provided a plan
  • Gave expert advice
  • And became source of accountability
That’s it.

I have been going to the gym on-and-off since secondary school, the only reason my gym goals have finally started to take off (18 years later!) is because I hired a PT who provided me with the same 3 things. I didn’t hire a gym ‘mentor’ or a gym ‘coach’, I hired a Personal Trainer someone who has been through what I want to achieve, knows exactly how to get there in as few steps as possible and, most importantly, someone who holds me accountable to putting in the work.

Building muscle is simple;
  1. Lift heavy things
  2. Eat more protein rich calories than you burn
  3. Remain consistent
We all know what we need to do, we just don’t know how.

It took me 18 years to figure that out!  If only I got there sooner, I’d be in unbelievable shape! Ray’s success has pushed me to continue pursuing my goal of elevating magic, and showing people how to strive for their goals in magic, even if that means one person at a time.

So what’s in it for you?
In helping Ray achieve his goal I discovered I too had a limiting belief system that was holding me back from achieving my potential. I’m still working on it, and my hope with this newsletter is to inspire, educate, and hold you accountable to yourself, to take your magic to the next level and join in helping to raise to tide of the magic industry giving Magic the recognition it deserves (GivingMagic, get it now?).

My intention is to write a newsletter which contributes to a healthy diet of magic content that can be consumed as a tasty snack, in 6mins or less. Each issue will have a ‘workout plan', an action you can take to help encourage personal growth and hold yourself accountable.

🔁  If you know someone who might benefit from this newsletter it would be cool if you shared it with them, it would really help me out!

💪🏻 Workout Plan:
 Answer these two questions;
  • Why are you doing magic?
  • What is your ultimate goal in magic?
    • Hit Reply to this email with your answers, I'd love to read them!

🍎 Magic Diet:
The Royal Road to Card Magic
 One of my first ‘proper’ magic books, I recently flipped through the first few pages and found this absolute gem! ‘Mirror of The Mind’ - It’s simplicity is a thing of beauty, and I know the riffle shuffles would have fooled me. Ah, I love it! I’ll be having some fun with this.

🤩 Favourite things:
Drafts App
  1. Capturing ideas is one of the most valuable things I do, whether it’s magic ideas, watch lists, multi million pound business ideas (sure), I’ve tried lots of apps, voice notes, and even carrying a physical notebook around. The one I’ve consistently used is ‘Drafts’. The difference with drafts above all the others I’ve tried is when it opens you immediately start typing, zero friction. The next step it to regularly review the notes (okay I’m still working on that!)
