And we’re back! As a lifelong educator and now parent, it always feels like September is the “real” new year so, happy new year! Fall feels like possibility…and I’m still processing so much of summer. My summer was…interesting. Workwise, I helped several clients declutter to make room for their creative work projects, unpacked + set up Paul & Shelley’s house after their mega-awesome renovation, and taught Marketing Professionalism to eager Seneca College students online. Downtime was spent mainly outdoors in the Kawartha’s (2 hrs NE of Toronto) enjoying Bass Lake, Peterborough & Lakefield. One highlight was creating art collages with a group of fabulous women at the always inspiring Haliburton School of Art + Design. Yup, made more icebergs, this time out of my to-do notes and stickies, see above. The “interesting” part of my summer was figuring out how to manage the mega loss of energy, focus and motivation I'd felt since May. For a multi-passionate portfolioist who thrives on variety, novelty, and action, the reality that I couldn't “just" do it all and meet my high expectations was hard to accept. Health, age, and brain wiring are undisputed contributors. Resting and self-care were (are!) needed to manage my burnout. By slowing down and paying attention more intently, I’m learning about my decisions, behaviours and motivations in a whole new way. It’s fascinating and I’ll share more on all this soon. For now, I’m excited to re-engage with you all here. HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED BURNOUT? WHAT HELPED YOU RESET? |

Despite feeling burnt out, I did manage to read quite a lot. Perhaps having less mental bandwidth and wanting to better understand my physical and mental state contributed? Of the 24 books I read this summer (anyone else motivated by tracking what they read on Goodreads?! I love seeing my list live), here are 7 non-fiction books that made a big impression: - Brave Enough: Quotes from the author of Wild -- Cheryl Strayed
- The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less -- Barry Schwartz
- Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle - Emily & Amelia Nagoski
- Faster than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success with the Secrets of the ADHD Brain -- Peter Shankman
- From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life -- Arthur C. Brooks
- RenWomen: What Modern Renaissance Women Have to Teach Us About Living Rich, Fulfilling Lives – Dale & W. Scott Griffiths
- Atlas of the Heart – Brené Brown
Overall, these books illuminated the importance of making healthy choices, setting appropriate boundaries, recognizing inherent limitations, and being gentle on oneself in order to live healthier. Being brave, aware, humble, and honest also help…none of which are “easy” when feeling stressed and slow. HAVE YOU READ THESE? WHAT ARE YOUR TAKEAWAYS? |

I could not take my eyes off Austin Butler as Elvis – wow! He embodies the brooding, creative, troubled man with such verve and vitality. And director Baz Luhrmann brings all the glam and sequins you'd expect to this visual feast. However, beyond the glitz is the sad story of a man who gets caught up in someone else’s creative dream who, in this case, is his manager played by Tom Hanks. Although Elvis became very successful, he never fully expressed himself singing “Black music” and paid for that choice with his life. Very sad. Elvis reminds us of the dangers inherent in abandoning creative dreams. IS THERE A CREATIVE DREAM YOU'RE HOLDING BACK ON? |

In this super fun and energetic conversation, Jennie O'Connor and I talk about “flexible structures” that enable multi-passionates to create and focus - never an easy task when your brain wants to implement a gazillion ideas RIGHT NOW! We also talk about eschewing corporate life, how it's cool and overwhelming how quickly we learn what we like and tune out the rest, and why connecting ideas and people is so life-affirming. We ended with a roundup of ideas on how to declutter and create project-specific stations that work well for busy bees like us. Such a fun chat! WHAT TYPE OF FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE? |
