WHY I LOVE TO TEACH  |  GET 50% OFF SKILLSHARE  |  INSTAGRAM TIP: NOTES
Hey there, First name / friend,

Has your year looked like you'd hoped it would? Mine sort of hasn't. I'm not sad about it — it's still been a GREAT year… it's just been different to what I had envisioned. I'd expected to teach more this year… but it just didn't turn out that way. And we wanted to travel a LOT more (that's a whole other story). Thankfully, I'm ok with changing plans and priorities because I’m an optimist and I trust the journey.

While reflecting about this past year… I thought about you this morning (as I was hanging out the washing, because — ‘alone time’) and it occurred to me that I've never actually shared with you…
Why I love TO TEACH

Teaching fellow creatives has been one of the most fulfilling things I've done (on par with my coaching sessions) because I know it's how I can truly make a difference in people's lives.

Perhaps you share a similar background to me? No formal art training, no tertiary education, working in a corporate office job — all the while longing for the opportunity to earn income from our creativity, full-time.
For me — those yearning feelings are still so fresh in my mind… mostly because I won't ever let myself forget how badly I wanted what I have now. The time I was feeling that way was less than a handful of years ago.

From a very young age, I had aspirations of being a creative entrepreneur (long before I knew what to label it) and I always believed — perhaps even trusted— that I'd make it happen one day. Don't ask me why I believed it, because I obviously had ZERO clue how I was going to make it happen at age six (I mean, the internet didn't even exist!)

As you know, I tried the handmade side-hustle route for many years which did ‘ok’ but never grew to the point where I could ever entertain the idea of leaving my day job.

Then I had an unplanned three-year hiatus around mid-2012 — 2015 where I didn't do anything creative! Creativity became a chore. Can you imagine it? I had a big 'life event' happen which definitely left me depressed and I lost my creative mojo good-and-proper.

So, how was my big dream ever going to come to fruition?

Trying to make and sell products with kids around is hard! This is Sonny's baby pillow-hand while I was trying to take product pics. #nothelpful… but so cute.
I fell in love during my hiatus and had kids — and they are what (who?) rekindled my creative buzz. I went back to what I knew and I — somewhat lazily — picked up where I left off with my handmade business. Once again I got nowhere with it. Plus, it was SO much harder (and stressful) with two little people around.

I had a corporate job with a toxic culture, which saw my dreams of becoming a creative entrepreneur become more vivid than ever.

My BIG ‘end' goal was clear in my mind… I just had to figure out how to attain it. So I opened my eyes wide and looked for new opportunities. I wandered down many winding paths and jumped across many — what I like to call — 'stepping stones' when transitioning my career from ‘corporate’ to ‘creative’.

And once I focussed on the right things and started making strategic decisions based on my end goal — my life changed quickly. In around 18 months Dan and I had quit our corporate jobs and were self-employed creatives — something I'd always been envious of.

Now, I'm beyond thankful to be working for myself, on my own terms, and making my own rules. Which is why I feel driven to teach… I'd even go so far as to say that I feel obligated (as if there's karma attached).

If you have those ambitions, First name / creative friend, then I want to help you achieve the same!

Stay tuned, because I'm almost ready to announce my next course!

10 Skillshare classes for Emerging Surface Pattern Designers
(on creative entrepreneurship + more)
This month Skillshare is having a HUGE sale — 50% off their annual membership.

I've been a Skillshare subscriber for 3 years now (basically, since I found out about the learning platform), so I'm thrilled to be an affiliate (I'm currently writing a class to publish on there).

When I started out designing fabric, I had no idea what ‘surface pattern design’ was… and I’d certainly never heard of Skillshare! So, in case you also don’t happen to know what Skillshare is (or you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet) — Skillshare is a dedicated platform for creatives to learn expertise from other creatives. And, it’s brilliant!

Now… the timing of my telling you about Skillshare isn’t an accident. I’m bringing it up now because they’re running a 50% off promotion until November 29 — BUT you can start learning right now for free!

So, to help you take full advantage of the free period, I’ve put together a list of 10 Skillshare classes for Emerging Surface Pattern Designers to give you a holistic learning experience; because I know that becoming a self-sustaining surface pattern designer and creative entrepreneur is more than just mastering art techniques.

Keep in mind… this list is just a taste of the classes that Skillshare has to offer! And you’re free to explore all the thousands of other classes on the platform, too (because there are lots and lots of things to learn… even if it’s just for a fun hobby for some self-care!)

Feeling overwhelmed by more Instagram changes? No need!

Notes are probably one of the quickest, easiest, and least imposing methods of communicating on Instagram and I've quickly realised how these short snippets of information could be helpful to communicate and engage with others — but there's a catch!

You'll want to start following back the customers who follow you… ASAP!

Until next time, First name / friend!
