IN THIS ISSUE: 🌎 It’s Heritage Month and We’re Everywhere: Whether you call it “Hispanic,” “Latino,” or “Latinx” Heritage Month, the days between September 15 and October 15 are filled with celebrations of our rich cultures. Now, if only it could be like that all the time! 🌪 It’s Also Hurricane Season and We’re Worried: Five years, nearly to the day that Hurricane Maria decimated much of Puerto Rico, Hurricane Fiona hit several island nations, leaving millions without power. 📺 But At Least We Have Fall TV to Distract Us: We may mostly be streaming content these days, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still excited for a new slate of Latino-led shows like Andor. |

GIVE US THE HEADLINES. ALL THE HEADLINES Yes, it’s a little annoying that so much Latinx content gets relegated to the thirty-odd days of our heritage month. And yes, sometimes it seems like these stories are more about explaining who we are to outsiders rather than celebrating the community among ourselves. But that’s not always the case. Like in POPSUGAR’s “Ritmo” collection, exploring the impact, feminism, and history of reggeaton thanks to journalists like Natalie E. Ruiz-Pérez, Yvette Montoya, and Johanna Ferreira. And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn't give you at least one action item for Heritage Month - mainly supporting Latine businesses. Thankfully, Mercedes Viera rounded up 22 Latine brands to make it easy for us. |

HURRICANE FIONA IS A TERRIBLE SEQUEL TO MARIA It’s been five years since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and the island is still recovering. For the Washington Post, Arelis R. Hernández went back and interviewed the people profiled just after the storm and found “much of the post-Maria recovery work had just begun.” And that was before Hurricane Fiona knocked out power across the archipelago, and battered the Dominican Republic. Thankfully as Dánica Coto reports, no deaths have been reported in either place yet, but that didn’t keep PR Governor Pedro Pierluisi from calling the event “catastrophic.” |

Who else is thankful for Diego Luna? So it makes sense that companies like Disney would invest in content that speaks to us, which is exactly what we see in Andor, the latest show in the Star Wars franchise. It follows Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor from Rogue One and is getting great reviews across the board. But what makes it top of our list is how much it makes us feel seen. As Lissete Lanuza Sáenz says, “Perhaps... ‘space Latinos’ can be more than just a cute nickname. Maybe we can be the heroes without assimilating or changing parts of ourselves. Perhaps Cassian Andor is who he is not in spite of his heritage, but because of it.” |
