Dear First name / friend

When I wrote my latest blog post, I was reminded of what some scholars call the ‘two pillars’ of our Yoga practice:  Abhyasa and Vairagya (definitions for these 2 Sanskrit words follow):
  • Abhyasa - Perseverance to the practice. Also practice for an extended period of time; without interruption; and with dedication.
  • Vairagya - Not attached to the results. In my practice, I see that - as I continue to try to do handstand - my attachment is not to whether I can do the pose but, rather, to my inability to jump. What should I do? Practice jumping!!!
So, I persevere and I practice (without attachment).

On another note, I participated in an interesting educational day last week - the Fallbrook Health District's Wellness Center provides a “Mental Health First Aid Class”. This class is 8 hours long and offers tools to assess, listen, and guide a person in a mental health crisis towards help. The offerings by the Health District for the communities of Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, and DeLuz are, in most cases, free (as was the Mental Health First Aid class). Great service for us; check it out here.

Now, as things cool down (temperature-wise), I find myself busier in the past couple months. Attendance in my classes at
Sage Yoga has been increasing, and the schedule at my office (
No. County Yoga Therapy) is filling - both good things.

If you (or someone you know) may benefit from my experience and training, I'd love to hear from them!

on my end table:
Yoga Therapy for Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis by Jean Danford. A very helpful book that not only offers poses / sequences that will benefit those challenged by Parkinson's and MS. It also offers observations as to what might complicate working a particular pose or class of pose with these students.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Set in the 60's, this work of fiction was entertaining and in many ways empowering. Truly shining a light on the ways women have been held down, ignored, passed over - no matter their life choices.

for more light reading:
  1. Really? These poses are core work?
  2. Looking for interesting board games to play with the kids / grandkids?
  3. Do you have preteens? or teenage boys?.
  4. And, my recent blog post is available for reading.

Until next time,
Leslie
