Do you ever think about something that happened to you years ago and shudder, First name / friend?

You know, like the time your waitress told you to enjoy your food, and you said “thanks, you too!”?

Or the time your ex caught you screaming-crying-singing Potential Breakup Song by Aly & AJ at a stoplight?

Or the time you were walking out of your college apartment, and the popular girl from your Stats class waved to you across the quad and yelled “hey, cutie!”, so you waved back, only to realize she was waving to the guy behind you?

(That one actually happened to my best friend, Hannah, and I will be laughing about it for the rest of my life, but she's definitely cringing so hard reading this rn.)

Welp, as I was writing the sales page for Site Series®, that whole-body shudder came over me full force as I remembered this story… 🤢

A couple years ago, when I started this whole freelance copywriting journey, I looked into taking some courses on the subject to sharpen my skills.

I've always been a very resourceful, “I'm gonna figure this out by my damn self” person—mostly because of my crippling perfectionism disease and fear of being bad at anything, but whatever—so I was confident that I'd find some good ones.

When I Googled “copywriting course” and clicked on the first link that didn't look half bad, I was so excited, so ready, to get started.

I scrolled through the long ass sales page, wondering when the hell I'd find the price, getting nervous with every scroll, because the course was starting to sound like too good of a deal…

And, unfortunately, I was right.

This dude wanted $5,000 to provide me with a “copywriting certification.”

Obviously that scared me into thinking I needed a copywriting certification… so I headed back to Google and searched “do you need a certification to be a freelance copywriter" like the noob I was.

(I'd written copy in previous positions before, but I was brand-spanking-new to the world of freelance. I had no freaking idea what I did and didn't need.)

Trusty old Google told me no, thank God, I didn't need one.

Phew. I just saved $5,000!

…then I started to think about it.

How mother-F-ing scammy was this dude?!

He was literally preying on baby aspiring copywriters, knowing they'd believe they needed a certification to start their new business, counting on the fact that they wanted this new career so badly they'd dish out FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS and take his (really convincing) word for it?!

To get a “certification” that they DON'T need and doesn't even EXIST?!

In that moment, I was enraged. I've always been passionate about education—and even more passionate about revolting against assholes—so I swore off online courses for life.

I counted allll course creators out as SCAMMERS.

(This is where my “all or nothing” vibe really bites me in the ass sometimes.)

I swore I'd teach myself how to become the best freelance copywriter without EVER spending a single dollar.

Screw the online course industry. They're scammy. I'm smart. I can do this on my own.

So, I got to work.

I watched every YouTube video.
I downloaded every lead magnet.
I signed up for every free trial.
I read every blog post.
I emailed all the big creators and asked for advice.
I asked for feedback left and right.
I trial-and-error-ed my way for years.

And, eventually, I got good at it.

…and, eventually, I realized I was being ridiculous.

I could have spent alll those hours on actual client work, getting paid for my efforts.

Or writing blog content, to grow my business.
Or posting on social media, to build my community.
Or creating my first lead magnet, to get subscribers on my email list.

But nope. I was taking my sweet ole time learning, because I ~swore off online courses~ like the Stubborn Sally I am.

This one sketchy dude selling this fake copywriting certification had no idea I even existed. Why was I living my life in retaliation of his scammy offer when it wasn't affecting him at all?!

I was drinking the poison expecting he would die. When, in reality, my actions were only killing my time and energy.

So, if you haven't signed up for Site Series® yet because you're classically skeptical of online courses… I don't blame you, First name / friend.

It wasn't until I got my first-ever course creator client, Claire, that everything changed for me.

Through the process of writing her sales page, her sales emails, her ad copy, and her course bonuses, I saw firsthand that all course creators weren't scammers.

They were simply people with a genuine interest in helping their community.

And that's exactly why I'm here. I want to HELP you, and I knew that one-on-one services might be too large of an investment for you to feel comfortable with right now, so I made this resource as an alternative.

Some courses are scammy. This one isn't.

In fact, I was SO petrified of accidentally somehow making it scammy, that I spent MONTHS making sure that this course included everything you need to know about website copywriting AND getting more views from the right people.

(And, thankfully, past students validated my hope that it would be good enough by calling it “the best investment they've made” and said it was “worth every penny” and that “other courses couldn't hold a candle to it” and that compared to other courses, it “did not disappoint.”)
