TOBACCO
We have been told that tobacco is BAD for us. However, for years, much like cannabis, many indigenous cultures have utilized tobacco as a plant medicine as an anti-inflammatory for muscle relief, as pain relief for skin irritations and even as a disinfectant.  However, smoking the tobacco plant, especially in its current incarnations and its mass production, have been detrimental for our cardiac and respiratory wellness.  Yet, we cannot ignore that PART of the mental, spiritual and physical wellness of consuming cannabis is SMOKING. The deep breaths in, exhalation of rich white smoke and especially the FLAVOR. Many of us genuinely enjoy their cannabis flower with the flavor of tobacco.

Unfortunately, tons of consumer tobacco products are treated with dyes, pesticides, flavor and smell enhancers. Some brands like White Owl, Hype, Phillies, Zig Zag, Swisher Sweets and more  are machine manufactured often pressed with added chemicals, synthetic or homogenized sheet papers and inorganic materials which are likely not optimal for your wellness and long-term pleasure.

So what’s the solution so that we can continue to enjoy the flavor and maintain our overall wellness/good health?

When purchasing tobacco products at the smoke shop, look for words like ‘natural leaf wrap’, ‘whole tobacco leaf’, “organic”,  “pesticide free” or “no added flavors and chemicals” .

If you’re buying any type of tobacco leaf , try to find a direct route to farmers and small businesses. This can be difficult but there are many available online. However, if you are buying tobacco leaf from a local smoke shop or deli/bodega, INSPECT for mold, foreign substances and CLEAN your tobacco leaf (Click here or here for 2 common methods on how to do so).  As Grabba is usually dried and shredded, it is more difficult to inspect for foreign substances and most are not regulated.  It is best to make your own. Instead of tossing your dried out pieces or ends that don’t make the wrap, collect and shred them for your future Grabba use.

We recognize that pleasure and ritual are part of the wellness in consuming the plant; so please take extra care and intention in choosing
WHAT YOU ARE SMOKING WITH!

*Please be aware that Front/Grabba leaf is considered highly addictive so please monitor your intake and if you are noticing an issue, cease the use of the tobacco products and detox.
Cannabis smoking can help with the oral fixations linked with the tobacco addiction. Smoking your cannabis flower in a vaporizer can help.  Or substituting the tobacco leaf with a hemp wrap can also help with the rolling ritual associated with tobacco.

Our dear friends King Aswad & Jasmine Burems of @ClaudineFieldApothecary are harvesting their VERY FIRST harvest of New York grown Cannabis for our emerging regulated market.

Both King and Jasmine are East Coast natives from ‘Sugarhill’ Harlem and West Philly respectively. Both neighborhoods were some of the many neighborhoods targeted by the war on drugs from the 70s and to this day. Jasmine made her migration to BK where she met King, and both have been longtime residents and homeowners in pre-gentrified bedstuy.

King (former musician) and Jasmine (former musician, community herbalist and yoga instructor) are long time holistic hemp farmers and agriculturalists (including horticulture, bee farming, etc..). They have now shifted to investing their time and their knowledge of holistic farming into their harvest and the future of the NYS Cannabis Market.

Jasmine and King are now Provisional Cultivation License Holders as part of The New York State Day 1 Social Equity Cannabis Industry promise. They are also some of the few Black farmers registered to grow THC in the state, and were just given a GLOWING inspection by the Office of Cannabis Management. In addition to their accomplishments, they are one of the FEW if not only people who have personally tended their own crop this inaugural season of THC Cannabis Growth.

These amazing folks who are in direct community with a lot of us have made strides in this changing market and we are so proud and honored to witness their accomplishments!
