This Thursday will be our eighth Thanksgiving since Birdhouse opened in the fall of 2015! Can you believe we've been here that long?
Being a yarn shop in the desert is no small feat! It runs contrary to what many would think. But wool is magic! Garments made from wool are wildly breathable and wick moisture away from the wearer to provide insulation with both cooling and warming benefits. In case you doubt us, take the domestic sheep. Shearing sheep in Spring means the sheep have at least one inch of wool on their coats in summer. An inch of wool is enough to keep sheep comfortable during the hottest periods of the year in much the same way it does for us humans. Wool wicks moisture away from the skin to help get rid of body heat more rapidly. By the winter, the sheep's coat is thick enough to insulate against the cold of winter. Telling you, magic! And of course, there are plenty of other fibers like linen, bamboo and cotton if you're not into wool.
While we can make a solid case for wool, the truth is the power in knitting and crochet is in the relaxation and connection that they foster as well as the power of creating. That can happen no matter where you are, even in the desert. Dearest yarn birds, thank you for seeing us through the ups and downs of starting a new business, the day to day life of a small business and even a pandemic, for connecting and relaxing with us. Thank you for the past seven years. With that in mind next Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday we will be saying thanks in a number of ways!

Dream in Color Assigned pooling skeins
The darlings at Dream in Color have created three new colorways especially for Small Business Saturday, that lend themselves to assigned pooling. What is assigned pooling? Designer Dawn Barker is the champion of assigned pooling patterns that have captured the knitting world's imagination. She describes assigned pooling in the following way, “Assigned Pooling occurs when a change in stitch and texture is assigned to changes in color within a skein of variegated yarn.” In this case, simple Stockinette Stitch is assigned to the main color to create a backdrop for the cluster stitch assigned to the accent color. We will have a limited number of these gorgeous skeins available on Small Business Saturday. We're open from 10am - 3pm on Saturday.
