Hello! As I write this newsletter, trees are being trimmed along our street which will open our views and ensure we won't have to duck while walking along the sidewalks. It's a good connection to the newsletter theme for this month: landscapes. I've narrowed a bajillion possibilities to just three inspiring examples. There's also a studio update below (also landscapes 🙂) and registrations links for upcoming events. Plus, I've added some new works to my shop (also landscapes 🙂). If you scroll all the way to the very bottom, you'll find a discount code. I hope the landscapes you're seeing are beautiful in their own inspiring ways.

  1. Matthew Wong Paintings There is an exhibition of Matthew Wong works at the Dallas Museum of Art. A few of his landscapes stopped me in my tracks. I especially loved The Realm of Appearances with is dense, colorful, mark-filled foreground, unfussy sky and symmetrical composition. I'm eager to explore more mark-making in my own work and think about how that can be achieved with fabric and stitch.
  2. Head Full of Promises Video I saw this music video from the Avett Brothers in a tiny upstairs gallery in Maryland years and years and years ago. It's stayed with me. The stop motion is masterful, but it's the idea of representing changes in a landscape over time that is mesmerizing. The music is great too. Here's the artist Jason Mitcham taking about the making of this video.
  3. Changing Leaves Can one tree be a landscape? Let's say, yes. This short video of a tree going from green leaves to bare branches is another inspiring representation of the passage of time. There is so much to bring to the studio here – the colors, the lines, the changing light, the varied sky, the elements in the background. All so good!

Studio Update
I'm returning to a series of four landscapes I started back in January and including some “broderie perse" elements in each one. This is a technique where I cut an image from a piece of printed fabric and arrange it in a new way in my compositions. Luckily I had some fun elements in my stash – veggies, flowers, birds and bugs. Follow me on Instagram for updates on these pieces.

No Follow Up Session in December. Stay tuned for 2023 dates.

Many of you have been asking for open enrollment workshops! Here we go! I'm thrilled to be teaching two virtual workshops with Mancuso's QuiltFest Virtual School House in January!

I was honored to be a panelist on a recent episode of Textile Talks where I talked about my art quilt collage Provisions, using personal symbols and how I hope viewers bring their own ideas to my work. You can watch below or here.

I've added a new series of small landscape collages to my Etsy shop. I titled this series “Sit. Still.” Normally we hear this phrase as a directive, maybe to someone who’s a bit squirmy. I’m embracing it as a mantra to rest and restore — and to take in all our surroundings. Each piece in the series includes collaged fabrics hinting at pink sunsets on brisk, cool days in places where you can see all the way to the horizon. A chair created with a hand carved stamp is printed on the surface and outlined with stitching. Textural machine stitching in several pink tones enhances the serene sky. Improvisational hand embroidery adds detail with color, line and sometimes very subtle color.
