Women in Diamond Mining: The Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana

YOU ROCK THIS LADIES!!!

 

Women play a key role in the Karowe diamond mine located in Botswana on the continent of Africa. Traditionally a male dominated industry, this thriving mine, owned by Lucara, is rich in diamonds and is headed up by a female CEO. 75% of its executive committee is women, and 31% of the workforce is women.

 

No glass ceiling here! Women are leading the way! This mine is positively supported by the community at large and residents have very positive experiences and feedback of the value this mining operation brings to their way of life in relation to improvements, opportunities, healthcare, better education, and a higher economic status, amongst other things.

 

Even though the Karowe mine is relatively small, the mine has yielded an inordinate number of large, high-value Type IIA diamonds. “We are the only mine in world history to recover three diamonds in excess of 1,000 carats in size,” said Lucara’s CEO Eira Thomas.

I have the fun opportunity and privilege to participate in two exclusive Ladies Holiday Boutique Shopping events at local country clubs in the area for the holidays. The first one took place on November 29th and I got to meet so many amazing women who love diamonds and jewelry so there will be some happy ladies this holiday season when they open their presents.

I’ve tried it and the reactions have been priceless. It’s not the amount that counts, it’s the gesture. Sometimes the smallest amounts make the biggest of impacts because it was unexpected and thoughtful. Seriously, I’ve given $5 gift cards and you would think I gave them $100…that’s how amazed and grateful people are. People will look at you in disbelief, then smile, and then usually thank you profusely. I’ve even had someone get scared and refuse it maybe thinking it was a scam. Poor thing.
