By now you can probably tell I'm not a big fan of new year resolutions, but instead each January I pick a word for the year.
Well, I have a hard time picking just one word and usually pick 2. The idea is you sit down with yourself and think about what you want the coming year to bring. What do you want to change? How do you want your life to look in 12 months? What do you want more of? Less of?
And then pick a word (or 2) to be your theme for the year. Any time you're feeling astray or want to easily check back in with yourself or make sure your choices are aligned with your goals, look back to your words of the year.
Last year, my words were Play and Rest. I've been doing a LOT of work on healing my inner child and teen, and a big part of that work is engaging in more playtime. So I went kayaking, a lot, since I loved that when I was younger. I bought some paint by numbers, downloaded a lot of emo songs from circa 2006, saw Green Day live, and made it a priority to do things that pleased my younger self.
Rest? Well, that didn't work out so well, I totally failed at slowing down (so, it's ok if you aren't successful in completing your word. We're all human!!) I think 2022 was one of my most insanely packed years to date.
This year, my words are Build and Lead. One of them is pretty literal and other is more conceptual. There's something top secret we're working on this year that requires a lot of making, and as Whimsy Soul grows I'm trying to step into more of a leadership position (which is hard for my Virgo ass who wants to do everything myself!) But I'm going to try.
So, as you ease into 2023, I urge you to pick a word to two for yourself. Add it to your Notion board or a sticky note where you can see it every day and see just how much more impactful that is compared to a resolution.
