- - - PURPLE FLOWERS - - - We all know cannabis varies in color depending on strain and other contriubtuing factors. While the novelty of purple weed often lies heavily in it's aesthetics, it's interesting to know HOW certain cannabis plants have that famous purple hue. ANTHOCYANIN A water-soluble flavanoid (plant pigment) responsible for giving a range of different plants their red, purple, or blue hues. One of those plants include the cannabis plant. The anthocyanin in certain cannabis flower work in combination with other chemicals to give the plants their distinctive, and varied colors. To yield purple flowers, it is necessary to choose a strain high in Anthocyanins (some include: Grandaddy Purple, Blackberry Kush, Purple Haze, etc…) |

Flavanoids effects on the colors of cannabis flowers rely on a couple things: - It's genetic make up. The relationship the flavanoids create with the environment and other components of its genetics directly contributes to the color of the plant.
- Ph levels in the growing and cultivation environment. The Ph value in relationship with the natually occuring flavanoids in a plant can change the color of the plant based on their reaction to each other. “Acidic conditions, which is low pH, may turn plants red. Neutral pH typically results in a purple color. Alkaline, which is high pH, typically results in a blue color.”- Healthline.com
3. Temperature. Temperature of the environment either maintains, or breaks down chlorophyll in plants. Chorophyll is the substance responsible for giving plants their green pigment. Depending on whatever other flavanoids are present, a lack or abundance of chlorophyll will determine the color of a plant. |

As a grower/cultivator, succesfully growing/harvesting these beauitful purple buds can be a reflection of a great grow and great genetics. As a consumer we need to know the nuiances and processes behind our favorite strains and their amazing visual qualities. This time we went over how certain strains get that beautiful purple hue NATURALLY. While this a common and safe way to yield purple buds, it is not the only way thats used in the market today. Stay tuned for our next ‘Colors in Cannabis’ segment, as we 'll get into the ways growers can manipulate the environment and/or growing process to get an alternative result. |
