Thank you to @Yona_xo for January's Burning Question! Their question was: "Where do the recycled clothes that can't be donated go?" It is a common misconception that you can donate any item you don’t want any longer, regardless of its condition. Clothing donations should be clean and free of stains and tears. They should be something that another person would wear. It has been found that around 45% of donated clothes are not accepted by local donation centers and end up in other countries, often polluting their ecosystems in poorly managed landfills. When a thrift or consignment store cannot use your clothes, there are still ways to repurpose or recycle your items sustainably. Learning how to repair a zipper or add a button back onto your clothing could give your item the refresh it needs for you to keep wearing it or to donate and resell successfully. If your garments are past repair, they can be cut into strips of cloth that can be used for cleaning around the home. Another option is to give your old clothing to a company that will downcycle your items into insulation or rags. Many local and national companies perform this service. However, look for transparent companies regarding what happens to your textiles, such as TerraCycle and For Days, to ensure your items are put to use and don’t end up in a landfill. |

You can submit them by DMing us on any form of social media, or emailing us at scp_contact@ahec.edu. At the end of each month, we will reveal which question was selected by the staff and address it in the upcoming newsletter! |
