New Testament 2023 Newsletter #6
Matthew 4; Luke 4-5
The Spirit of the Lord Is upon Me
(Jan 30-Feb 5)

A note from Emily & David
We are trying something new this year!  Many of you have asked us for help with preparing and teaching your lessons, so we changed up the way we record these episodes.  Instead of one long episode, you will notice chapter breaks.  You can still watch the episode as a whole, or you can pick the segments you want to invest your time in.  We will title each segment below so you know what to expect.  This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying Matthew 4; Luke 4-5. Here is what you can look forward to:

40 Days: Overcoming Wilderness Experiences
Recognize the Dove: How the Spirit Leads, Protects, Overcomes, and Ministers
Words of Grace: What Jesus Came to Do
Belief Dashers and Miracle Seekers: Which One Are You?
Launch Out into the Deep: 5 Invitations that will Change Your Life

We are so excited to spend this year learning with you!
With love,
David and Emily

This Week's Printable

This week we are focusing on taking the invitations Jesus gave to Peter, and seeing how they could redefine our life.

Teaching Tips for Kids
Read Luke 5:1-11
Give your children five pieces of paper.  Tell your children the story of Peter and the nets.  Have them draw a picture of each of the invitations as you read.  At the end, ask them which picture is their favorite and what they learn.

Teaching Tips for teens
Read Luke 5:1-11
Print out the worksheet above for each of your teens.
As you read through the story, take a minute to stop at each of the invitations and have your kids write how they would have responded.  Then ask them to consider where Jesus might be offering that same invitation in their life today.

You might consider reading the three paragraphs in the adult section below, depending on how long you have to teach.

Teaching tips for individuals and couples
Read Luke 5:1-11
Are your boats sinking with blessings?
Are your nets breaking with goodness?
Consider taking some time to accept each of these 5 invitations from the Lord.
Winston Churchill said, “To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents.  What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.”
Perhaps you have been tapped.  Maybe the Lord has extended the same invitation to you to leave something behind.  Yours might not be a fishing net, but it will be just as difficult to walk away from.  They can be so entangling, nets ––of every kind.  Are you everything you could be?  What is holding you back?
Because Peter wanted what the Lord had to offer more than he wanted the things that held him back, he left his nets straightway and followed Him.  What if Peter had believed that being the most successful fisherman on the Sea of Galilee was his greatest potential?  What if Peter had not straightway left his nets that day?  Imagine the life he would have missed out on.  He would never have discovered what the Lord saw in him.

Will you?

Come Follow Me 2023 Study Tools
Maybe you know this about us by now, but we are both visual, hands on learners.  Because of that, we are always trying to discover study tools that will help bring the scriptures to life in your home.  We will be using several different study tools this year, here is what we love most about each of them:

Videos:
For the New Testament we will be recording all new hour long vides, but this year they will be broken into ten minute segments in case you want to watch them for ten minutes every weekday, or you can watch them all at once.  These videos are totally free and can be found on YouTube or on our APP.

Journal:
The journals for the next four years have been totally redesigned with a theme in mind.  You will find questions to ponder daily that can be used for teaching or family discussions.  There are workbook pages based off of our most favorite part of each lesson that week.  You can also use these workbook pages for lessons or discussion.  There will also be a space for recording one name of Jesus Christ each week.

Devotional Book:
Perfect for a 5-10 minute lesson, these books can be used as a devotional every day.  This book is designed for personal study or family study.  We love to use ours around the dinner or breakfast table.

Word a Week Posters:
Perfect for a three minute study, these posters include one word and one verse a week for pondering.  Hang them somewhere in your home where they will be a daily reminder of Come, Follow Me.  This year we will be studying one name of Jesus Christ found in that week’s lesson.  By the end of the year we will have come up with 52 names.

Tip Ins:
These are small papers that can be glued right in your scriptures with tips and truths that will help to improve your study.

Stickers:
Use these colorful stickers in the margins of your Scriptures or in your Don’t Miss This Daily study journal.

Hopefully these tools will make your scripture study something you look forward to!
