Hi friends,Ā
Ā
I will share a secret with you that I only teach in my habits workshops.
Ā
Are you ready?
Ā
Here we go:
Ā
You Need Shine to Make Habits Stick.
Ā
Need more? Read on.
Ā
Teaching workshops on habits has taught me that learning to make them very easy is one of the most challenging parts for the attendees to implement.
Ā
I donāt blame them. We have been conditioned to āGo Big or Go Homeā so much that going small is uncomfortable because our brains wonāt consider small a win. Small does not count.
Ā
Does that feel painfully familiar to you?
Ā
Thatās why the author BJ Fogg stresses the importance of not only making the desired behaviors easy, but alsoĀ celebratingĀ while we are doing the behaviors or right after we complete them, so they turn into habits. He argues, controversially so, that behaviors turn into habits faster by immediate positive emotions accompanying them rather than by repetition.Ā
Ā
Celebrating once we wipe countertops orĀ oneĀ countertop, with a broad smile or by applauding ourselves or doing a little jump or whatever works for us, is what BJ Fogg calls a Shine moment.Ā
Ā
Ā
This uncommon positive and immediate rush of feelings is the small reward that wires the new habit faster into our brain, making us want to repeat it the next time until the behavior becomes automatic.Ā
Ā
Iāve been implementing this strategy, and itās been quite a success. You should see me smiling in the kitchen while looking at my reflection in stove mirror/cover after my 5 am 5-minute stretching.
Ā
Try it out.
Ā
Now, will you keep the secret?
