Too much good news.
That sounds strange, I know. Sometimes it feels like the world is going to hell in a hand basket. (Btw what exactly is a hand basket?) But the truth is, this month there is more good stuff going on than I can fit into one newsletter! With that said, if you know of a story I've missed, please respond to this email or message me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Let's do this!
By design.
New York recently became the first state in the nation to guarantee the right to repair. I love the idea of applying quilting principles to mending (now if my kids would just let me get at those kneeholes). When people can’t toss old clothes in the trash — as prohibited by a groundbreaking new law in Massachusetts — maybe they’ll think twice about buying fast fashion? That's good because ThredUp predicts 2023 will be the tipping point for the “resale revolution.”
Climate critical.
The United Nations released a report showing that the hole in the ozone layer will “mend” by 2066, due to agreements forged at the 1987 Montreal Protocol that banned refrigerant chemicals. The federal government’s new Short-Term Energy Outlook report predicts renewables will soon generate 25% of U.S. energy – and coal’s not coming back. The latest International Energy Agency World Energy Report stakes a serious claim: 90% of new electrical expansion will be renewable by 2025. Finally, EVs are at the tipping point: Sales topped 5% last year and could reach 10% in 2023 as planning begins for a national networks of 500k chargers.
Healthy living.
What’s the secret to withstanding extreme weather? California makes a pretty good case for regenerative agriculture. In Texas, a half-acre produces organic produce for 100 families, netting the farmer $120k per year. Daily doses of algae reduce methane-emitting cow burps — and it could be a sustainable superfood source for humans, too. Chicken grown in a lab delivers cruelty-free meat – curious how vegans feel about this? And now from Nest comes Mill, a food waste reduction program that turns your discarded compost into chicken feed.
have you tried?*
