Creative Kickstart Week 4 |
|
With Valentine's Day around the corner, I had this idea in mind for this week's prompt: what word is related to this holiday that we can totally turn upside down? 🙃 This is what I love about this process-- taking a word/theme, examining it, diving into all its forms and meanings, considering the various possibilities, then transforming it in a tangible way that only you or I can do because of our unique experiences and vision. I hope the list below can help spark some ideas and as always, feel free to interpret this week's prompt in whichever way you feel most connected to! |
|
What are you imagining for your sketchbook page this week? |
|
- Apply your medium to your page using these synonyms for crush: squash, squeeze, press, pulp, mash, flatten, splat. See how many different ways you can come up with, use tools/supplies/objects you have lying around, look at it from different perspectives, and have fun with it!
- Crushed velvet--the texture, the pattern, the feel, the way it shines and darkens. Consider replicating it or making your own version of crushed velvet using a medium(s) of your choice! See this dress or this fabric swatch as a starting point.
- “Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.” – Stella Adler
- Crush your own colors and experiment with making dye or “paint” from natural pigments found in berries, leaves, veggies and more! Here are a few blogs to refer to: Lost In Colours, Tanya Val, Caitlyn Irwin.
- Use a crushed plastic bag to paint flowers (wet on wet acrylic paint tutorial), a cherry tree, or a background for your collage/collage paper.
- Use plastic bags within your artwork--literally. I had never seen someone do this before and thought it was really interesting! It could be a new way for you to experiment with collage and mixed media.
- One last bag idea: Try this watercolor clear plastic bag of lemons demo.

- Crush paper to create textures and dimension. Use it as a background, tear it into little pieces you can arrange, use the crinkle lines as an outline and add paper, color, etc. to the different sections.
- “And when you crush an apple with your teeth, say to it in your heart: Your seeds shall live in my body, And the buds of your tomorrow shall blossom in my heart, And your fragrance shall be my breath, And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons.” ― Khalil Gibran
- How can you use an aluminum can and the act of crushing to create a mark?
- 3 ways “crush” was interpreted through song: Girl Crush - Little Big Town (this song wasn't what I expected it to be about and I really liked that twist), Crush - Jennifer Paige (all the 90s things in this video!!), and #1 Crush - Garbage (performed live).
- Create a piece inspired by a crush of yours: current, childhood, celebrity, or celebrate self-love because you're totally crush worthy :) You can also try capturing how it feels to have a crush using shapes, colors, and textures.
- Take a hammer and crush some things onto your paper: flowers, fruit, paint, pastels, crayons, paper towel used to clean your brush, etc.
- “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” – Mark Twain
- Crush soda, crushed soda cans as a metaphor for our lives, crushed ice (here's an idea and the results), mortar and pestle (so cool to get to watch the process at the start of this video!)
- Consider the opposite: reconstruct, reform, solidify, decompress
