Welcome to Notes From Natty - our standing Friday morning coffee date (inbox style of course) where you get a weekly writing tip, a round up of the latest at Natty Writes and Friday Finds and Faves that I simply canā€™t gatekeep. Grab your cup (Iā€™ve got mine ā˜•ļø) & letā€™s dig in ā¬‡ļø

Hey hey, First name / friend!

As youā€™re reading this, Iā€™m vacationing in Cabo and one of my besties gets married tomorrow (EEEK!) so naturally my celebration heart is at a level 10, but being on vacation reminded me of something I overheard while working at my co-working space last weekā€¦

I was working away, just doing my thing when I overheard a girl that works at a cruise line calling customers to confirm bookings for 2024.

And Iā€™m not talking early 2024 - some of these were for summer and beyond.

I love to vacation and I would consider planning extensive trip itineraries as one of my personal hobbies, but I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever planned a vacation more than a year in advanceā€¦ except maybe for my destination wedding.

It made me think though that people intentionally plan vacations YEARS in advance, but when it comes to business or our careers, we donā€™t always hold the same mentality.

Why is that? Iā€™m not sure that I have an answer, but it made me stop for a minute and reconsider the way that I think about my business and how I want to plan for it.

I donā€™t want the things that I accomplish to happen by chance, so I decided to take inventory of the things I wrote down in January and actually create a PLAN for them.

Too often, weā€™ll create big goals for ourselves at the beginning of the year, but when life gets busy, itā€™s easy to get caught up in the day to day without looking up to make sure youā€™re taking daily action on the right things.

It sort of reminds me of how Stephen Covey talks about the difference between leadership and management in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The story goes like this:

ā€œYou can quickly grasp the important difference between the two if you envision a group of producers cutting their way through a jungle with machetes. Theyā€™re the producers, the problem solvers. Theyā€™re cutting through the undergrowth, clearing it out.

The managers are behind them, sharpening their machetes, writing policy and procedure manuals, holding muscle development programs, bringing in improved technologies and setting up working schedules and compensation programs for machete wielders.

The leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree, surveys the entire situation, and yells, ā€œWrong jungle!ā€

Youā€™re the leader of your life and you have to be able to identify when youā€™re in the wrong jungle!

And the only way you can do that is if you slow down long enough to look up and make sure that the things youā€™re working on are aligned with who you want to become and what you want to accomplish or achieve.

So, I invite you to join me in taking inventory of your goal or growth list for the year and make an intentional plan to get there. āš”ļø
Writing Tip of the Week
Break up your paragraphs.

We arenā€™t in English class anymore, so you are allowed to break up your paragraphs. In fact, if you want to make your readers happy, Iā€™d suggest that you do this in alllll of your writing.

Blogs. Emails. Social media captions. All of it!

The truth of the matter is that most people are skimmers, which means if you want them to catch the most important parts of your message, it needs to be easy for them to read!

My rule of thumb is to make ā€œparagraphsā€ 1-2 sentences and always bold, italicize or underline to call attention to the most important parts.

Friday Finds & Faves
This is probably the most random Friday find of all, but one of the main points of this newsletter is that I donā€™t gatekeep, so here we are.

A few months ago it seemed like all of my drugstore deodorants just stopped working - yes, weā€™re getting personal here.

So I was determined to find a new one that didnā€™t leave me smelling like I just did a hardcore workout (spoiler: I donā€™t think Iā€™ve done a hardcore workout ever in my life. Iā€™m a #healthygirlwalk kind of person) and wouldnā€™t ya know I got served an ad for Rio Deo by Sol de Janeiro.

If you arenā€™t familiar with this brand, theyā€™re responsible for the viral Bum Bum Cream and body mist on TikTok! I rarely buy from ads, but I felt pretty desperate and bonus, it's aluminum free.

And Iā€™m happy to report that it works like a deodorant is supposed to work and the smell is SO FREAKING GOOD. It doesnā€™t rate as perfect as I would like it to on the Yuka app (Iā€™ll talk about this more in another newsletter), but itā€™s MUCH better than Dove.

So, Iā€™m calling it a win for now. šŸ†
