My reflexes bounced between spitting my beer in her direction and melting right into my wobbly seat and pouring out into the street. Every little bit of imposter syndrome Iāve worked through over the years came rushing back.
Because honestly, I knew what she meant.
Here I was, just a girl with a degree in environmental biology who used to spend her days literally catching insects out of streams and looking at them under my silly little microscope, saying I was a copywriter. I donāt have a degree in writing and until the past few years, Iāve never considered myself to be a creative. A researcher, thatās what I was.
But you see, thereās so much Helen didnāt know. The countless hours Iāve spent learning and researching or the thousands of dollars Iāve poured into mentorship and education. She couldnāt see the heart of the girl sitting next to her, she couldnāt peer into my mind and see the journey Iāve been on. She couldnāt feel the connection Iāve made with my clients or the soul Iāve put into my projects. She didn't experience the years unlearning who I thought I had to be and how this new era of creativity and freedom changed my life.
Though in a moment, she made me question myself. šµāš«
Youāre bound to run into a Helen. There are going to be people skeptical of what youāre capable of. People who make you feel small, sometimes unknowingly, because they donāt understand our world.
Our world made up of dreamers. Of people who have the fucking guts to go all in on something. Of doers who were born with the āI can do thatā gene. Weāre not imposters, weāre entrepreneurs. And sometimes, if you arenāt in our world, itās hard to see us through the deeply seeded societal norms that coat the brains of the skeptics.
But weāre here, doing hard things, building lives weāre proud of, constantly evolving, and learning more. And Iām damn proud to be doing just that.
So take this as your reminder First name / friendā¦
You can do ANYTHING.
Not everyone will understand your heart or your goals, but thatās okay. Because thereās this weird little digital bubble of business owners that will understand completely.
And Helenās arenāt invited. š¤Ŗ
