Today we’re talking about a girl we’re gonna call Helen.

(an alias because I may or may not have some strong feelings to spill about today’s topic)

First name / friend, you’re bound to meet a Helen at some point in your life. Super intelligent, interesting perspective on every conversation, seems friendly enough. Until you realize something…

Helen thinks she knows best. šŸ™ƒ

But… you just met Helen. And while she doesn’t know that much about you or your journey, she sure has a lot to say about it.

You see, I met my Helen while I was traveling. We had similar lifestyle choices, loved to travel, and lo and behold – she has a degree in writing. So of course, she’s interested in my job, how I’m making money, and what services I offer.

And I happily gave her my arsenal of one-liners tucked away when I have to explain to people what it is that I do. Creative copywriter specializing in websites, writing marketing material for creative entrepreneurs like photographers, web designers, etc.

Nothing could have prepared me for what came out of Helen’s mouth next. Sipping on a beer along a crowded street in a vibrant seaside town in the south of France, the sentence slipped effortlessly past her lips and sent an (what I like to believe was) unintended zing across the table.

ā€œSo you’re not like a real copywriter.ā€

My reflexes bounced between spitting my beer in her direction and melting right into my wobbly seat and pouring out into the street. Every little bit of imposter syndrome I’ve worked through over the years came rushing back.

Because honestly, I knew what she meant.

Here I was, just a girl with a degree in environmental biology who used to spend her days literally catching insects out of streams and looking at them under my silly little microscope, saying I was a copywriter. I don’t have a degree in writing and until the past few years, I’ve never considered myself to be a creative. A researcher, that’s what I was

But you see, there’s so much Helen didn’t know. The countless hours I’ve spent learning and researching or the thousands of dollars I’ve poured into mentorship and education. She couldn’t see the heart of the girl sitting next to her, she couldn’t peer into my mind and see the journey I’ve been on. She couldn’t feel the connection I’ve made with my clients or the soul I’ve put into my projects. She didn't experience the years unlearning who I thought I had to be and how this new era of creativity and freedom changed my life.

Though in a moment, she made me question myself. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

You’re bound to run into a Helen. There are going to be people skeptical of what you’re capable of. People who make you feel small, sometimes unknowingly, because they don’t understand our world.

Our world made up of dreamers. Of people who have the fucking guts to go all in on something. Of doers who were born with the ā€œI can do thatā€ gene. We’re not imposters, we’re entrepreneurs. And sometimes, if you aren’t in our world, it’s hard to see us through the deeply seeded societal norms that coat the brains of the skeptics.

But we’re here, doing hard things, building lives we’re proud of, constantly evolving, and learning more. And I’m damn proud to be doing just that.

So take this as your reminder First name / friend…

You can do ANYTHING.

Not everyone will understand your heart or your goals, but that’s okay. Because there’s this weird little digital bubble of business owners that will understand completely

And Helen’s aren’t invited. 🤪
