As this chart shows, I’m a clear type 4—the same type as Nicole, incidentally. While types 2, 3, and 4 depend on their emotional intelligence to understand their own reactions and connect with others, my type differs from types 2 and 3 based on its core desire and fear. This summary from the
free Truity Personality Library says it all:
Fours are defined by their sense of being special and different from other people. They are often creative, and present a unique, distinctive persona to the people around them.
Fours experience a deep conflict in that they long to connect with others, but they feel that because they are so unusual, very few people are able to truly see them as they are.
Deepest Fear: Fours fear that they are flawed and are missing out on some basic aspect of happiness that other people have access to. To cope with this fear, they amplify what is different and special about themselves, looking for the niche in which they can truly be appreciated.
Core Motivations: Fours are motivated by their desire to express their individuality and to be unique. They do this through creative endeavors and by over identifying with the aspects of their personality that they view as lacking or deficient.
That all sounds pretty bleak, doesn’t it? It is. Still, every type of personality plays an important role in our society. If any one type were removed completely, humanity would lose a significant contribution to its very essence!
So, how have I learned to harness my fears and motivations to succeed in life?
If you reread the “Deepest Fear” segment, you’ll notice that my type struggles deeply with envy. Envy, however, can soften into competition, and competition...is motivating. Have you ever done something just because someone said you couldn’t? You’re not alone.
Additionally, my motivation to contribute something unique and significant to society keeps me going even in the darkest of times. No one else can do what I can in exactly the same way I’m going to do it—so I must do it, no matter how inconvenient my personal circumstances are.
