Hi First name / Toasters,

Happy International Women's Day!

Today, we celebrate you—the women who are developing digital products that will have a lasting impact and shape future generations. Let’s raise a Toast 🥂 to the first computer scientists, who paved the way for our successes—women have been coding before men even knew how to turn on a computer.

Women are making great strides toward better representation in tech, with 23% of Canadian women-led startups having at least one female founder! 👩🏻‍💻 But it’s not only founders who are killing it:
  • 42% of computer science graduates in Canada are women 🚀
  • The percentage of women in AI-related jobs has increased from 22% in 2018 to 24% in 2020 🧠
  • Women now make up 25% of the cybersecurity workforce in Canada 🔐
  • Women make up 39% of data analysts and 33% of data scientists in Canada 📈
  • Women make up 39% of product management roles in North America 📲
  • In UX design, women make up 42% of roles globally 🎨

While we celebrate our successes, it’s time to have a serious chat—there's still work to be done. Women of colour are still severely underrepresented in tech, making up only 6.3% of new hires in Canada. And let’s not forget the lack of funding, with only 2% of VC funding going to female-led companies. Come on investors, it’s time to start putting your money where your mouth is! 💵

But enough talking—it's time for action! Diverse female talent helps create more inclusive products and services. Toast partners are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work on their diversity initiatives, prioritizing gender equity, paying women what they deserve, and cultivating an inclusive work environment that fosters growth and innovation.

Let’s break down barriers, and get that bread 🍞

Morgan Braun
Hi there! My name is Morgan and I’m a public health technology professional based in Toronto with a passion for technology and innovation within the health sector. My journey into tech was not entirely intentional at first—I was working as a children’s therapist in a clinical care setting prior to graduate school and knew that there had to be a better solution to many of the issues I, and families were facing with access to proper services. That’s when I decided to pursue my Master’s degree, where I had a few classes on using technology in Public Health, and I fell in love. It felt like my two biggest passions were colliding.

Since then, I’ve spent the last several years working as a Product Owner for an NGO and then a health tech start-up where I was working on various digital health innovations, which was amazing! But unfortunately, my team was laid off due to company restructuring and so now I am looking for a new team to make an impact with! I am hoping to work with another health tech company as a product owner or product manager where the mission is to better public health outcomes with whatever service/product they are offering. I want to work with great people creating amazing things!

🍞Can you give us a piece of advice for anyone who has recently experienced a layoff?

Be gentle with yourself—it can be quite a shock and adjustment, especially when it’s unexpected and when you really loved the team and the company. I was really frustrated the first few days. This had never happened to me before and I was very sad to be unwillingly leaving a team that I really loved. But I was also able to take some time to decompress, which was a hidden gift in the whole process. Burnout can take months to fully recover from and I know that the next job I go into, I will be fully present for now that I’ve had a good break. While you’re job hunting, spend extra time with your friends and family, take longer walks with your dog, and try new hobbies that you’d been putting off because you didn’t have the time. Try to balance the job of job hunting with extra time for living life!
