Continuing from yesterday's mirror work practice, self regulation is important to talk about, especially around being seen and seeing ourselves, truthfully and creatively.
Â
Journeying the depths of you can be overwhelming, First name / my love. It can bring up fear, judgment, shame, anger, grief, frustrations, and a whole lot of resistance.
Â
Culturally, we are taught to compare ourselves to others or to judge the imperfections we see. While this journey is meant to empower you and shift your perspective, insecurities can certainly creep up. I honor your experience. All emotions are welcome.Â
Â
Following are some gentle and affirming practices to engage with if you ever find yourself in this place. These tools can help you create resiliency and safety for your mind, body, and spirit.
Â
BREATHE
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
Â
CONSENT
Ask your body for consent and listen for your “yes” “no” or “maybe”.
Â
ORIENTING
Look around your space and slowly allow yourself to take in objects and light around you. Notice that you are here in this present moment, and that you are physically safe.
Â
GROUNDING
Make direct contact of your body, or a part of your body, with something that provides physical support. For example, hug yourself or stroke non erogenous parts of the body. Press yourself against the ground or seat. Or, step outside and connect your feet to the ground, letting Earth’s energy flow up into your body.
Â
MOVEMENT
Shake your body, starting from your feet and letting it move up, then back down. Have a quick dance and let your body move in any way it wants to.
Â
RESOURCE
Find a resource in your body that you can come back to at any time if you feel overwhelmed. Speak out loud 3 pleasant sensations in your body, and the location of the sensation. For example, “I feel warmth in my heart”. Find a resource in your body that you can come back to at any point if you need to.
Â
Remember, these are practices. Some will come with time, especially reaching for them in moments of heightened nervous system responses.
