MARCH MINI CHALLENGE
RAINBOW LETTERING 3 WAYS

Inspired by both St. Patrick's Day and the first day of Spring, I thought we could use all the colors of the rainbow to letter this month! More details about the challenge are below as well as links to this month's worksheets.

Pens used: Stabilo Pen 68 Brush (photo below) except for orange which is the Marvy Uchida LePlume II.

CHALLENGE
Letter using the colors of the rainbow 3 ways: rainbow drills, rainbow letters rainbow sentences.

DETAILS
Use the worksheet to practice on before creating your final pieces.

What you'll need: brush pens in the following colors--red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.  (It's OK if they are different brands. If you need to borrow Crayolas from your kids those work great! Similar brush tip size will look more consistent but if they are a little different, don't worry about it. If you don't have all the colors, that's OK too--work with the colors you do have.)
*If you are an advanced letterer, use brush pens you don't normally use as an extra challenge!

Each exercise is assigned to a week of the month to help you create a schedule for working on this challenge throughout. It's up to you which specific days you want to work on them and for how long! I recommend 15 min 3-5 times a week for consistency! Use the last week to catch up or take a break :)

1. RAINBOW DRILLS ON DOT PAPER | First full week of March
Personally, guidelines can be too restricting so I really like using dot paper--it's just the right amount of guidance to keep my lettering straight and consistent. In case you haven't tried it, here's your chance! Maybe it won't be for you but I think it's always helpful to try different things out. I wanted to start out this challenge with drills because it's always helpful to go back to the basics! Most of my colored pens are also thicker/softer brush tips than what I'm used to so I felt this was a good place to start.
  • Practice Worksheet: The dot grid allows you to practice drills in each color of the rainbow (each row being 3 dots high with a space in between each color). I chose this drill to practice the transition at the bottom between thick and thin stroke. Feel free to do the same or try loops, circles, etc. *Don't forget to pause and pick up your pen when needed!
  • Final Worksheet: Use the full sheet of dot grid paper to letter 2 rows of drills in each color. This may seem very simple but it's a great way to practice consistency!
  • Instagram Photo Idea: Snap a pic with each colored pen next to its row or surround your sheet with gold chocolate coins and/or green construction paper shamrocks -for St. Patrick's Day! Don't forget to tag @atiliay and hashtag #betterlettersin15 #bli15mini

2. RAINBOW LETTERS | March Week 2
Another way to utilize colors is to create each letter of a word in a different color! (I like picking one word to apply this to--it helps make it stand out but also it can get tedious if you have to keep switching colors for a bunch of letters!)
  • Practice Worksheet: Try this technique on the word "rainbow". Note the "o" includes both blue and purple. *Guidelines are lightly printed in case you want to use. When bouncing I try to keep the bulk of the letters between the 2 solid lines, this helps to keep the word balanced and easier to read. I then stretch the letters I do want to bounce above and below those two lines.
  • Final: On a separate piece of paper, letter the quote: "Life without dreams is like a rainbow without colours". Leave all the words black or one color except for "rainbow". *I like cutting regular sized paper in half horizontally and lettering on half sheets of paper. The size of my letters aren't very big so this size works best for me!
  • Instagram Photo Idea: Snap a pic with the brush pens you used scattered around the piece like a border. Don't forget to tag @atiliay and hashtag #betterlettersin15 #bli15minii

3. RAINBOW SENTENCES | March Week 3
Change the color of each sentence.
  • Practice Worksheet: Letter the phrase: "Capture a shadow, dance with the wind, stand in a rainbow, begin at the end." There are 6 lines for each color of the rainbow on the worksheet. Start with pencil then go over each line with each color. Erase any visible pencil marks after the ink COMPLETELY dries.
  • Final: On a separate piece of paper, letter your final piece. You can pencil in guidelines if that helps!
  • Instagram Photo Idea #1: Use any colored construction or scrapbook paper you have lying around as the background for this piece to add even more color to it--go big and bold! Add brush pens, washi tape, or fun clips and paper clips as props around the edges to fill up the empty space.
  • Instagram Photo Idea #2: Now that you are done with all your exercises, snap a photo of all your sheets (and hard work!)together! Don't forget to tag @atiliay and hashtag #betterlettersin15 #bli15mini

I try to create these challenges so they can be done by letterers of all different levels. If you are newer to lettering, feel free to use the same layouts I did for the quotes! When I first started, creating layouts with multiple sentences was very challenging so I hope that this can help if you're feeling the same way. If you're comfortable creating your own layout, feel free to do so! And as always, you can follow the prompts as closely or loosely as you like--make it work for you.

Seeing all the bright colors of the rainbow instantly cheers me up and makes me happy! :) I hope you have a lot of fun with this month's lettering and that it can brighten up your days! As always, feel free to share with me whether it's an email or Instagram post/stories or DM!

Enjoy the month ahead and happy lettering!

Take care,
