CHALLENGE
Blossoming: the process and time of budding and unfolding of blossoms.
This month's mini challenge is to letter "blossoming" surrounded by flowers! I hope that when you are done, you can put this up somewhere as a reminder that we are just like flowers--always growing and budding. And with time and patience, we will also unfold and blossom. Below are step by step pictures and instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: IN PENCIL, LETTER THE WORD "BLOSSOMING" IN THE CENTER OF A PIECE OF PAPER (you can use plain or dotted paper if you'd like some guidelines). Feel free to mimic the lettering in my example or use your own lettering style! For this piece, I recommend adding bounce to your lettering--it provides more interesting spaces for your flowers to be drawn in! Don't worry about thin and thick strokes, the pencil is to help you outline the shape and spacing of the word.

STEP 2: GO OVER YOUR LETTERING WITH A BRUSH PEN. I used this Zebra fine point brush pen. No need to erase pencil lines yet, we will do this at the end. Be sure to let the ink dry before moving on to the next step to prevent any smearing.

STEP 3: CREATE A PENCIL BORDER around your lettering. Try to keep the spacing as consistent as possible. I feel like having this space between the lettering and drawings keeps it easy to read, legible, and gives it a cleaner look overall.

STEP 4: IN PENCIL, ADD DRAWINGS OF FLOWERS AND LEAVES around your lettering. PLEASE DON'T FEEL INTIMIDATED BY THE DRAWING PART! :) I wanted to add this to switch things up. For those of you who already enjoy drawing, this is a way you can incorporate it into your lettering. For those of you who have never tried drawing flowers, I hope you get to try something new and maybe discover something you really like! Just like lettering, I find doodling and drawing to be relaxing and meditative. Here are a few tips:
  • Just like lettering, think of these flowers as putting lines and shapes together. Break it down whenever you need to and turn your paper whenever you need to!
  • I like using the pencil line as a guide and adding elements so that part of it is cut off by the pencil line. I feel like it makes the lettering look more embedded in the flowers.
  • Below is a step by step break down of the flowers I used in my drawing. Feel free to use them, make variations to them, or try something else completely!
  • I picked 5 flowers and 5 leaves to use in my drawing and repeated them around the word.
  • If you want to just draw one type of flower that's fine too! Try varying the sizes to give it more interest.
  • Also, don't forget we are using pencil so you can always erase! But don't get too stuck on it being perfect. Once you zoom out, you will get the effect and a few mistakes here and there won't matter :)

STEP 5: GO OVER YOUR FLOWERS AND LEAVES WITH INK. I used the Marvy Uchida LePen because it has a smooth fine tip so I can get all the details without the strokes being too wide. Start from left to right for righties or right to left for lefties so you don't smear anything! You can also lay a piece of paper over the areas that you aren't working on to prevent any smudging. Put on your favorite show, music, or podcast, and take your time tracing over all the drawings in ink.

STEP 6: LET IT DRY COMPLETELY, THEN ERASE THE PENCIL LINES. And you're done! Style your piece with real flowers, leaves, or your pens and pencils. Take a pic and share on Instagram! Don't forget to tag me @atiliay #betterlettersin15 #bli15mini so I can see it :)

SCHEDULE
May Week 1 | Letter "Blossoming". Take some time to practice lettering the word on scratch paper and experiment with different shapes and styles. Once you find the one you'd like to use, letter it on your paper and go over with a brush pen.

May Week 2 | Add drawings. Figure out what flowers and leaves you'd like to use on this piece--do some research online or take a look outside at the shapes of real plants. Pencil your drawings onto your piece.

May Week 3  | Ink your drawings.

May Week 4 | Style your piece, take photos, and share :)
If you finish early, create more! You can letter other words such as flourish, bloom, growth, and try drawing other variations of flowers and leaves. Maybe do one with only flowers and another with only leaves. You can also letter the name of a specific flower then add drawings of it around it.
