SEPT MINI CHALLENGE DRAWING LETTER VARIATIONS |
|
For September, I wanted to create an exercise where we can really incorporate drawing and other styles into our letters (it is also to prep us for Inktober coming up in October!)
September's mini challenge is to pick 4 letters and draw 4 variations of that letter! |
|
SCHEDULE 1 letter with 4 variations per week throughout the month WORKSHEET + DETAILS - Download the worksheet for this mini challenge:
GRID W/O GUIDELINES or GRID W/ GUIDELINES If you're left handed, fill in each box from right to left to prevent smearing. - I highly recommend using pencil first to lightly sketch out your design, then go over in ink.
- Brush pens may not be the best tool to use depending on your design! Use sharpies, markers, gel pens, ball point pens--whatever works best for that specific letter.
- Find inspiration everywhere to create different versions of the letters you choose! Think back to your childhood and favorite cartoons/books, look at your surroundings and find shapes and textures in the city or nature, check out different companies and their branding, browse through various styles of fonts!
- If you're sure where to start, begin with what you know and are comfortable with! Your brush lettering with bounce and/or without bounce, your cursive handwriting, your print hand writing. Start there and see if you can build off of that (make some lines thicker, add an interesting detail, include a flourish, etc.).
- In the example above, I took inspiration from traditional calligraphy, block letters, a type writer, gothic style calligraphy, playing with negative and positive space, scary movies, and balloons (which might be my favorite!)
