My ideal workout is at home, with the telly on.
It sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s the only way I’ve built a (mostly) consistent exercise habit.

I joined a gym in the UK a few months before the first lockdown. I didn’t hate it. But summoning the energy to walk there in the winter and figure out what to actually do meant I procrastinated no end.

At the end of 2020, I started virtual training with a PT. We were all stuck at home, and working out in the lounge room was normal.

I thrive on the flexibility of exercising without getting to a gym. I love diving into a juicy drama with multiple seasons while I hold a plank or count my banded squats. You'll never find me running.

Sometimes I haven’t exercised for a month. At times, my PT reduced the difficulty of workouts so I could do any kind of movement despite fatigue or sweltering heat.

It doesn’t look like what working out should. Yet I know all those workouts have been adding up when I do a press-up and feel the difference in my strength.

Your marketing strategy might be the same.

If you’re trying to keep up with the platforms or strategies you ‘should’ but don’t enjoy, you’ll probably feel shit and make any excuse to avoid it.

Marketing is a necessary part of running your business – just like exercise is part of the healthy-ish life I want.

So ask yourself: what changes could I make to turn marketing from ‘ugh, no way’ to ‘actually, I can do this’? (Also, if that answer really is ‘nothing at all’, then maybe it’s time to consider outsourcing your marketing).

Once you’ve worked out what you enjoy, stick to it and don’t be derailed just because what everyone else is doing looks different.

Progress might be slower. Sometimes it might feel glacial. But it will add up, and long-term, you’ll feel more confident about the sustainability and success of your strategy.

P.S. I recorded a podcast with my PT all about how she transformed her marketing by going niche in her content. Have a listen or read the blog post here
