Managing Early Season Corn & Soy Pest At Planting - Eastern Nebraska (04/17/2023) |
Planting has begun in Eastern Nebraska. Controlling early season corn and soy pests via in-furrow pesticides can protect stand establishment and foster plant vigor. Nematodes, insects, and fungi all pose risks to plant health. These risks may be elevated if cool, wet conditions ensue after planting. |
Always conduct a jar test prior to applying in-furrow pesticides to determine compatibility with starter fertilizers. A direct inject system may alleviate compatibility issues. |
Seedcorn maggot, wireworm, and white grub predation on corn seed and seedlings can reduce final stand. Baythroid® XL insecticide, provides activity on all three pests. Baythroid® XL is an EC which mixes well with starter fertilizer, and can be applied in-furrow at 2.0 – 2.8 fl oz/ac. For cutworm, tank mix 0.8-1.6 oz/ac of Baythroid® XL with your corn pre herbicide application. If there was a cover crop, heavy residue or winter annual weeds, stay on the high end of the rate. |
Nematode damage is easily overlooked due to damage occurring belowground. Nematodes are worm-like parasites that rob yield and create infection opportunities for other pathogens by feeding on roots. In Nebraska, a 2EE Propulse® fungicide label permits in-furrow application at 8 fl oz/ac to control corn nematodes. Sandy fields and fields exhibiting gradual yield decline, may be good candidates for a Propulse® application. Soil sampling can confirm presence of nematode species. |

Corn & Soy Fungal Pathogens |
Serenade® ASO and Minuet fungicides provide protection against common early season pathogens such as Fusarium, Phytophthora, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia. Both are OMRI Listed® biological fungicides containing the bacterium Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713. Both are registered in corn and soybeans. |
Managing Weeds With DiFlexx® Herbicide |
For weed control at planting in corn, DiFlexx® offers unique safety and flexibility to apply from pre-plant through V10. The safener in DiFlexx® works above and below ground in corn, but does not safen the product on soybeans or weeds. 8 fl oz/ac is a good rate to run on smaller weeds. |
