In The Field
Eastern Nebraska - 04/25/2023

Cold Weather Burndown
The following guidelines will help with burndown applications. 1) Minimum daytime temps in the 50’s. 2) Make sure nighttime temps do not dip below 40 degrees.
3) On sunny days you can spray on the lower side of the temp range, a stretch of 2-3 sunny days in a row is very helpful. 4) If temps are forecasted to drop below freezing within 2 days after application, delay the application.

Transitioning to Early POST Corn Herbicide Applications
Early planted corn is emerging in portions of eastern Nebraska. Rainfall and wind may have prevented pre herbicide application in these fields. TriVolt, Corvus®, and Balance® Flexx herbicides are labeled preplant through V2. It is critical that label directions regarding adjuvants in post applications are strictly adhered to.  COC and MSO can enhance burndown efficacy in preplant and pre applications. These adjuvants in post applications can cause crop injury and are not permitted in post applications with the aforementioned products. Be mindful of other herbicides in the tank mix. Loaded glyphosate products and products formulated with high oil content may also lead to crop injury. We will cover post options from V2 on in weeks to come.

Should I Tank-mix a Group 15 Herbicide with TriVolt?
Image item
Short answer – NO. Three active ingredients comprise TriVolt herbicide – isoxaflutole (Group 27), thiencarbazone-methyl (Group 2), and flufenacet (Group 15). TriVolt already contains a Group 15. Adding additional herbicides containing a Group 15 poses a crop injury risk. This risk increases under cool, wet conditions because crop emergence slows. Under these conditions, young plants spend more time in the soil absorbing the active ingredients and are not able to metabolize the active ingredients as rapidly compared to ideal environmental conditions.

Additives with 28% or 32% UAN
Some guidelines for achieving good burndown with fertilizer carriers. With 10 gal/ac UAN, use the same additives as recommended with water (1 gal/100 COC or MSO). At 20 gal/ac UAN or more use COC or MSO at 1 pint per acre. If you have mixing issues with UAN and any chemical, we have found that adding 2-3 gallons of water per acre to the mix will help significantly.

Burndown Guide
-Soybeans should not be planted if dicamba is spring applied unless they have the Xtend trait. Follow the label on the products allowed on these beans.

-When 2,4-D (4 lb/gal formulation) is applied at 16 fl oz/acre, the planting interval should be seven days for corn and soybean.

-When 2,4-D (4 lb/gal) is applied at a rate above 16 fl oz/acre, the planting interval should be 14 days for corn and 30 days for soybean.

-When dicamba is applied at 4 oz/acre in a burndown program, the planting interval for corn should be five days. If dicamba is applied at 8 oz/acre, the planting interval for corn should be seven days. DiFlexx is dicamba with CSI safener. Corn can be planted any time after application of DiFlexx. Our CSI safener has both soil and foliar activity, no other safener has this.
