Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, was observed this week to commemorate the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust.

The day was observed on social media with numerous messages expressing solidarity with the Jewish community, sharing the stories of Holocaust victims and survivors, and amplifying messages of perseverance. U.S. politicians posted messages in solidarity with the observance, including President Biden, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who also commended FCAS’ Stand Up to Jewish Hate campaign on the Senate floor as “a powerful reminder that we must never allow antisemitism to flourish and that we all have a role to play in standing up against bigotry.”

Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira was arrested last week for leaking classified military documents on a Discord server. The Washington Post reported Teixeira took on a different personality online, including posting a video “shouting racist and antisemitic slurs before firing a rifle”.

After Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed support for Teixeira on Twitter, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) criticized the silence of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), referring to Teixeira as an "anti-Semitic traitor." As conversation continues, Teixeira's alleged antisemitism is frequently mentioned by those who condemn his actions.

Human Rights Watch wrote a letter this month urging the United Nations to not adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism, arguing that the definition often labels criticism of Israel as antisemitic. The letter was originally sent on April 3rd with signatures from 60 human and civil rights organizations, but gained more attention this week after more organizations signed the letter, including B’Tselem, the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, and Americans for Peace Now.

Human Rights Watch is instead advocating for a resolution like one that was recently passed by the American Bar Association. The ABA voted to remove the IHRA definition from the resolution after receiving similar pressure. Human Rights Watch’s letter also named the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, and the Nexus Document as alternatives to IHRA.

Supporters of the IHRA definition point out that 35 UN member states, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, have adopted IHRA, arguing that rejecting IHRA is rejecting the definition most Jews endorse. However, the counter argument used by the opposition is that some Jewish organizations have also signed the letter rejecting IHRA.
